You and me are the new generation taking up the battle-cry for life. We are the thousands-upon-thousands who are attending March for Life rallies across the continent, being a voice for those who have no voice. It is our generation that will see an end to abortion because our passion for life and truth is an unquenchable wildfire. We are young, we are brave, we are unstoppable.
But why is it that our views never seem to be reflected in the polls? Why is it that poll after poll comes out indicating that no one really cares about the unborn and the gross injustice of legalized murder that is inflicted upon them daily?
Maybe it’s because nobody in the pro-life community knows that one has to sign-up to be surveyed by the pollsters. I wish I was joking about this.
A recent Angus Reid poll indicated that most Canadians are ignorant about the lack of abortion laws in Canada, with many mistakenly believing that there are strict laws in place governing the deadly procedure.
The poll found that 59% of Canadians believe there is “no point in re-opening a debate about abortion in Canada right now”. Maybe this was because the same poll found that 58% of Canadians mistakenly believe the country restricts abortion to the first trimester.
But can it really be true that 59% of Canadians are so calloused and hardened towards new life that they would avoid discussing the matter? Are Canadians really so lethargic and apathetic about abortion? The pollsters would have us think that, but I think the reality is somewhat different.
Here is my case against this particular poll. I know that I wasn’t asked for my input for this poll. And as far as I know, neither were any of my pro-life friends. In fact, I wonder if any of the 200 thousand LifeSiteNews Facebook fans were asked to partake in this poll. I bet not one.
And here is the reason why: I discovered that the poll was conducted last month in the form of an online survey among 1,009 randomly selected Canadian adults who are signed up as Angus Reid panellists.
Yup, you read that right. You have to belong to an online special club to give your opinion for this poll. How many life-affirming grandmas and grandpas, mothers and fathers, and aunts and uncles who don’t know two cents about the internet and online surveys were excluded from this kind of poll?
The kind of people who are the salt of the earth and most likely to be pro-life are not the kind of people who ever sign-up to take surveys such as this. So, it’s no wonder that all we hear from a poll like this is that nobody wants to talk about abortion. What this poll really tells us however is that the tech-savvy crowd that has signed-up to cash in on the monetary benefits of being an Angus Reid panellist is also the kind of crowd that has a mostly pro-abortion bias.
What can be done about this? Easy: Become an Angus Reid panellist.
Here’s what I found on the website: “Angus Reid Forum gives Canadians the opportunity to voice their opinions on a variety of topics and issues.”
“By joining the panel you become eligible to receive survey invitations and give your feedback to help shape the future of Canada,” the website states.
So, only those who sign up for something like this are the ones surveyed. And, as the poll indicates, it would appear that the majority of panelists are not pro-life. But I don’t think this is an accurate representation of where our country is at on the life issue. Just look at the thousands of people who attend the annual March for Life rally in Ottawa. These people represent perhaps hundreds of thousands if not millions of people who yearn for the day when justice is granted to the unborn.
So, pro-lifers, we need to do something about this lack of representation on the Angus Reid Panel. I just signed up myself. I encourage you to sign up as well.
Together let’s change public opinion on abortion by changing the polls. It starts with you and me.
