Family of forced abortion victim being hounded by Chinese authorities despite ‘apology’

by Ben Johnson Tue Jun 26 18:48 EST Comments (7)

BEIJING, CHINA, June 26, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – The husband of a 23-year-old who suffered a horrific forced abortion earlier this month is in hiding after relatives say Chinese authorities have beaten family members, whipped up “spontaneous” demonstrations, and left the family in fear for their lives.

Deng Jiyuan, 29, made international headlines when he posted a picture of his 7-month-old aborted child lying next to his wife, 23-year-old Feng.

In pursuit of its one-child policy, the Chinese government levied a 40,000-yuan fine ($6,300) for Feng’s unsanctioned second pregnancy, which the family could not pay. On June 2, in the seventh month of Feng’s pregnancy, their child was injected and killed against their will.

Last Friday, after the gruesome photo went viral, the family accepted an interview with the German magazine Stern. Soon, however, the internet featured photos of a crowd of protesters holding a banner outside the couple’s home that read, “Severely beat the traitors and expel them.” The couple’s family, who had rushed to their side, said they did not recognize any of the protesters as local, leading them to believe Beijing ordered the harassment in retaliation.

Deng Jicai, Feng’s sister-in-law, said her loved ones “feel like prisoners.” “Over 10 people here watch us 24 hours a day,” said Jicai.

On Sunday, her brother tried to travel to Beijing to meet reporters, but the crowd blocked his path, and someone kicked him in the stomach.

Three officials in Shaanxi province were fired and the government apologized to Feng, but the family says the government has not produced a promised investigation into the forced abortion.

“The forced abortion of a seven month pregnant woman is illegal under Chinese law. Why is the local government beating her husband and calling the family traitors for seeking enforcement of their legitimate rights?” said Reggie Littlejohn of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers.

Littlejohn called the firing of the officials “mere propaganda aimed at creating the illusion that the Chinese Communist Party adheres to the rule of law.”

Lethal foresight: deciding who gets to be born

by Eric Metaxas Tue Jun 26 18:20 EST Comments (16)

June 26, 2012 (Breakpoint.org) - On first hearing, it sounds like something out of science fiction: mapping the genome of a person who has not been born yet. But that’s exactly what geneticists at the University of Washington announced that they were able to do.

Their accomplishment has been called a “glance into the future.” But the question is: What kind of future?

Writing in the journal “Science Translational Medicine,” the researchers described how they reconstructed the genome of an unborn child using a blood sample from a pregnant woman and a saliva sample from the father.

According to the New York Times, they used a combination of “new high-speed DNA sequencing and some statistical and computational acrobatics.” Their accomplishment “heralds an era in which parents might find it easier to know the complete DNA blueprint of a child months before it is born.”

Now, “high-speed DNA sequencing” and “statistical and computational acrobatics” sounds impressive. But this begs the most important question: Why would parents want to know their unborn child’s complete DNA blueprint months before he or she is born?

The specter of “Gattaca” (the 1998 film about a society in which most children are made-to-order), is so visible in this story that even the New York Times warned of serious ethical considerations; considerations such as the possibility of an “increase [in] abortions for reasons that have little to do with medical issues and more to do with parental preferences for traits in children.”

Not only would fetuses with genetic diseases be aborted, as they usually are now, but the article says “it is also possible that parents may be tempted to terminate if the fetus lacked a favorable trait like athletic prowess.”

Marcy Darnovsky of the Center for Genetics and Society told the Times that this technology could “spur questions on ‘who deserves to be born.’ ” In a similar vein, Dr. Stephen A. Brown of the University of Vermont spoke of a move toward “positive selection”—a euphemism for God-like decisions about who should be allowed to be born.

For all the talk about “better and better prenatal diagnosis,” experience teaches us to be skeptical about where this genetic foresight will lead.

For starters, there’s what happens to unborn children who are diagnosed in utero with genetic illnesses: relatively few of them are ever born. Prenatal diagnosis already functions as a kind of “weeding out” process: Adding “thousands of genetic diseases” to the list, as this new technology will make possible, simply means more dead children.

And, for the foreseeable future, this technology cannot heal anyone – it can only give prospective parents reasons to kill their unborn child. A child made in the image of God.

Anybody who thinks that parents won’t be tempted to turn to their local geneticist for the perfect baby has not been paying attention. We already live in a culture where some parents demand that doctors prescribe a Schedule II amphetamine, Adderall, just to help their kids compete against their peers. And a culture that can’t bring itself to meaningfully condemn sex-selection abortions, at home or abroad, will not stand in the way of parents who want to play God.

All of which makes this “glance into the future” the stuff of science fiction nightmares.

Obama preaches Planned Parenthood, gays in the military to high school students

by Kathleen Gilbert Tue Jun 26 18:12 EST Comments (18)

DURHAM, New Hampshire, June 26, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - President Obama touted his support for funding Planned Parenthood, forcing religious employers to pay for birth control and abortifacient drugs, and ending the military’s ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy on homosexuality at a campaign event before high school seniors in New Hampshire on Monday.

Obama told the students that, by voting for him over GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney, “You can decide that instead of restricting access to birth control or defunding Planned Parenthood, we should make sure that in this country, women control their own health care choices,” CNSNews.com reported.

Obama was referencing his showdown with GOP House leaders over funding to the abortion giant last year, and his high-profile war with Catholic Church leaders over the birth control insurance mandate, the target of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) ongoing “Fortnight for Freedom” national prayer campaign this month.

The president also said voters will decide “whether or not we go back to the days when you could be kicked out of the United States military just because of who you are and who you love.”

He also appeared to hint at his recent support for gay “marriage,” saying: “If you’re willing to meet your responsibilities, you should be able to take care of your family, and own a home, maybe start a business, give your kids a better chance than you had -– no matter who you are, no matter where you come from, no matter what you look like, no matter who you love.  That’s what America is about.”

Obama also included a phrase referencing his past work involving “Catholic churches” on social justice issues: “As a young man, I worked with a group of Catholic churches who taught me that no poverty program can make as much of a difference as the kindness and commitment and involvement of caring neighbors and friends and fellow parishioners.”

The sentence is a relatively new talking point that has been repeated in several speeches nearly verbatim since Obama’s campaign kicked off this spring.

The Daily Caller’s Neil Munro wrote last month that Obama’s “new emphasis on his ties to the Catholic Church is a change from Obama’s previous speeches and fundraisers, where he did not mention that, early in his career, he was funded and supported by liberal Catholic officials in Chicago.”

The Obama campaign’s most vocal Catholic supporter in Chicago was Fr. Michael Pfleger, a left-wing priest sanctioned by Cardinal Francis George for praising the candidate in 2007 as “the best thing to come across the political scene since Bobby Kennedy.” After he was reassigned to a Catholic high school last year, Pfleger balked, saying he was determined to continue preaching the Gospel “in or out of the [Catholic] church.”

Whom should we obey: God or mankind?

by Rev. Eric Strachan Tue Jun 26 17:22 EST Comments (9)

Rev. Eric Strachan

‘My kingdom is not of this world.’ – JESUS CHRIST

If the Church of Jesus Christ is living out its corporate life in society authentically as the Church, then at some junction its beliefs and practices will bring it into direct conflict with the secular culture in which it finds itself. At some point, as the Church lives out its life in any society, it will inevitably clash with the dictates of the State. Whenever that occurs, and it will surely occur, the Church, its leadership and its adherents have two options, either capitulate to what is being forced on it by secular government and compromise its beliefs, or relentlessly stand its ground, stay true to the historic truths of Christianity, and face the consequences.

In a day like ours dubbed the ‘post Christian era’ when the lines of demarcation between Church and State are becoming as distinct as they have ever been, and more so, be assured the kingdom of this world and the kingdom of God will be kingdoms in conflict.

In the last few weeks a series of decisions made here in Canada by our courts and our provincial legislatures are unquestionably testing the mettle and the character of the Church.

On March 22, the government of Quebec’s “Dying with Dignity Commission” released its report on euthanasia, recommending the legalization of assisted suicide in exceptional cases.

Then quickly on its heels on June 5, Ontario’s Provincial Legislature passed into law Bill 13, the anti-bullying legislation called the “Accepting Schools Act,” mandating that Catholic schools and all schools make their educational facilities “more equitable and inclusive for LGBTTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, two-spirited, intersex, queer and questioning) students.”

Just more than one week later on June 13, again the same Legislature passed Bill 33, “The Gender Identity Bill” which will amongst other provisions allow Canadians to use public washrooms and change rooms of their non-biological sex if their sexual orientation does not match their biology.

Two days later on June 15, the B.C. Supreme Court lifted the existing provincial ban on assisted suicide and in a landmark decision gave people who wanted to end their life in this fashion the legal green light.

This whirlwind of legislation all passed into law in a breathtaking 22 days across our nation. How quickly the moral landscape of a nation can change!

It was the Prime Minister of the Netherlands in the early 20th century, Abraham Kuyper, who once said, “When principles that run against your deepest convictions begin to win the day, the battle is your calling, and peace has become sin, you must at the price of dearest peace, lay your convictions bare before friend and enemy, with all the fire of your faith.”

We in the Church are living at a moment in time in our nation when values that are the complete antithesis of historic Christianity are clearly “winning the day.” We can respond in two ways, capitulate and accept the new morality and tell ourselves with the devilish mantra of the Third Millenium, “The Church must change with the times,” or we can courageously become defenders of the same faith and the core values that were first delivered to the Early Church.

Bill 13, “The Accepting Schools Act” now legislates according to Section 303.1 (2) that “neither the (school) board nor the principal shall refuse to allow a pupil to use the name ‘gay-straight alliance’ or similar name for any organization,” or club, he or she wishes to start.

So the issue for Roman Catholic educators who are practicing and committed Christians who embrace the infallibility of Biblical truth and are not just C.I.N.O.’s (Catholics In Name Only) is, “Can I justifiably accept in a Catholic context a club that promotes sexual expressions that are contrary to Biblical teaching?”

What must be remembered, of course, is that Catholic education here in Ontario is funded from the public purse to the tune of $7 billion per year, and the question that must surely be asked of Catholic leadership is “Are the historic truths of Catholicism being sacrificed on the altar of ‘The Fear Of Defunding?’”

I say these things with great respect for my Roman Catholic friends. Some of the most profound influences in my own spiritual life have been Catholics, St. Augustine, Mother Teresa, Francis of Assisi and Jean De Brebeuf, the patron saint of Canada. I will be indebted to them forever for how they have inspired me, but how should the Church respond? How would St. Peter have responded to Dalton McGuinty’s “It’s my way or the highway!”

Faced with the ultimatum given by civil and religious leaders of his day to stop at once proclaiming the truths of Christianity (The Bible, Acts 5:29), Peter led a chorus of other apostles who responded in unison with the memorable words “We must obey God rather than men.” For Peter there was no question about it, no need for deliberation by any committee, we ‘must’ he said, to do otherwise would be to dance with compromise.

We are living in perilous times, as has been predicted. (The Bible, 2 Timothy 3:1) As the iconic folk singer Bob Dylan once said in his ’60s hit ‘The Times They Are A’ Changing,’ “There’s a battle outside and it’s raging, it’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls for the times they are a’ changing.” The unconscious prophet was dead on. The stained glass windows of the historic Christian Church are being shaken by the tectonic moral shift in society, the corridors of religious schools are being rattled as historic Biblical truth collides with the new tolerance.

“You better start swimmin’,” said Dylan, “or you’ll sink like a stone.”

Capitulation and compromise will never win the day. The Church must rise up as a phoenix from the ashes, divest itself of cowardly passivity, and declare with fire in its bones to itself and secular society, “Whom should we obey, God or man?”

St. Peter’s Church must of necessity speak up and act courageously like St. Peter or henceforth it ceases to be the legitimate and authentic Church!

Pro-life union members counter-protest pro-abort Canadian Auto Workers rally

by Thaddeus Baklinski Tue Jun 26 16:45 EST Comments (11)

WINDSOR, Ontario, June 26, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A pro-abortion rally organized by members of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) Local 444 as part of a protest against the “New Abortion Caravan” didn’t go as smoothly as planned, after a crowd of pro-life union members showed up at the event in a counter protest.

CAW rally organizers said the pro-abortion demonstration was also staged to protest Conservative MP Steve Woodworth’s motion in the House of Commons calling for Parliament to establish a special committee to consider when human life begins.

The pro-abortion rally took place Monday evening in front of the Windsor Regional Hospital. The Windsor Star reported that about 100 pro-abortion union members were faced across the street with about half that number of pro-life union members, who not only stood to defend the lives of the unborn, but to protest their union’s decision to wade into the abortion debate.

CAW national president Ken Lewenza recently wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper in which he stated the union is pro-abortion.

“We are involved in the political, economic and social fabric of this country,” Lewenza wrote, according to the CBC. “We have an absolute responsibility to speak up on social issues. We’re stepping up to the plate on issues that affect Canadians.”

Fran LaSorda, second vice-president of Local 444 and one of the organizers of the Windsor pro-abortion demonstration, told the Windsor Star the rally was a show of solidarity with other CAW demonstrators in London, Ontario, where the New Abortion Caravan was due on June 25.

Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform executive director Stephanie Gray said that she “found it shocking that the largest private worker’s union in the country is using its union dues to advocate for abortion. Participation in this union is mandatory, and yet people like CAW president Ken Lewenza are using the union dues of pro-life auto workers to advocate for Canada’s status quo as the only Western democracy to have no abortion restrictions.”

“What does abortion have to do with workplace issues for autoworkers?” she asked.  “It is unfortunate that Ken Lewenza has no respect for his employees’ freedom of conscience.”

Colleen Ferrato, who was on the pro-life side of the street at the CAW’s pro-abortion rally, agrees with Stephanie Gray.

“We have a huge membership. And because we have such a big membership and our ideas are so vast and broad, they [the CAW] certainly shouldn’t be involved in this arena at all,” Ferrato told a CBC reporter. “They need to keep their nose out of it because their membership does not feel this way. We’re outraged and disgusted that our voice is not being heard.”

Mike Nantais, a member of CAW Local 444, seconded Ferrato’s statement, saying he was infuriated when he heard about the CAW pro-abortion rally.

“I think the union should not be speaking for those types of views. They think they’re thinking socially, but I think that to speak for union members in general is a big mistake and I think it’s a cause of division,” said Nantais.

Pro-life Conservative MP Jeff Watson (Essex) said he has received numerous complaints about the CAW’s actions from constituents.

“The common thread [of the complaints] is that the union should be more focused on issues like job security for its members than to be involved in public issues or social issues,” said Watson. “Workers just want to focus on their job and I think they want the union to do the same.”

Watson supported Stephen Woodworth’s call for a debate on the personhood of the unborn child in Parliament when, in January, he told LifeSiteNews that though he does not have a “definitive position” on when human rights ought to apply to children in the womb, he hopes for a debate involving testimony from bioethicists, scientists, and human rights professionals around that question.

“Human rights may have a specific legal connotation,” he said. “I’m not a rights specialist. What I’m firm about is that personhood exists from the time of conception forward. That’s my philosophical belief on that.”

“I think we’re mature enough as a society, I think we need to be mature enough as a Parliament, to deal with these questions head on,” Watson stated.

The CAW also has a history of promoting homosexuality with their memberships’ compulsory union dues.

In 2002 the CAW threatened to drag a Catholic school board through the Human Rights Commission over its decision to forbid a male student from bring his homosexual boyfriend to a school prom.

In 2008 the CAW gave $25,000 to PFLAG Canada (formerly the Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) to help finance the homosexual lobby group’s efforts in Canada’s schools to promote homosexuality. PFLAG said the money would go in part to fund “school anti-homophobia initiatives.”

Tennessee enacts strongest ban on explicit sex-ed in U.S. after oral sex demo.

by Kathleen Gilbert Tue Jun 26 15:05 EST Comments (55)

NASHVILLE, Tennessee, June 26, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A new law banning explicit sex education, spearheaded after an anti-AIDS group two years ago demonstrated oral sex on anatomical models in front of high schoolers, took effect in Tennessee this week.

The law emerged after one Nashville parent in 2010 learned his 17-year-old daughter’s class had seen the performance of “safe” oral sex by the anti-AIDS group, Nashville CARES.

“It took me by surprise,” Rodrick Glover told The Tennessean at the time. “My daughter thought it was pornography.”

In response, the Tennessee gay news source Out and About targeted Glover as numbering among “fundamentalist bigots” who oppose the methods of Nashville CARES because the group “does not discriminate based on sexual orientation and, in fact, is considered to be gay-affirming.”

While opponents ridiculed the law as the “no holding-hands bill” for banning educators from promoting “gateway sexual activity” in the classroom without providing an explicit definition, the law currently interprets the term according to the criminal statute on sexual assault specifying acts such as groping or fondling, reports the Associated Press.

The law also prohibits family life curriculum from using “devices specifically manufactured for sexual stimulation,” carrying the possibility of prosecution and a minimum $500 fine.

Leaders from both the abortion and the gay rights lobbies opposed the measure, or the impetus behind it.

Elizabeth Nash, state issues manager for the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, told AP that “comprehensive sex education works.” “It delays sexual activity, it reduces the number of partners teens have, and it increases contraceptive use,” she said.

Joseph Interrante, president of Nashville CARES, told the media in 2010 that the class was explicit, but that participation required a two-page parental consent form. However, the consent form excluded at least some information, including mention that teens would be given AIDS tests.

In January, parents kicked a Planned Parenthood curriculum out of a New York state school district after it promoted oral sex as “abstinence” and demonstrated how to put on a condom.

34% of women seeking abortion choose life when offered help: Mexico City gov.

by Matthew Cullinan Hoffman Tue Jun 26 14:37 EST Comments (3)

MEXICO CITY, June 25, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - More than one third of women seeking an abortion in public institutions change their minds and choose life for their unborn children in response to alternatives offered by the Mexico City government, according to statistics released yesterday.

The city’s secretary of health, Armando Ahued Ortega, reports that during the five years that abortion-on-demand has been legal and subsidized by the city, it has received 125,000 requests for abortion services. However, it has only conducted 82,000. A total of 43,000 women have changed their minds and decided not to abort.

According to Mexico’s El Informador newspaper, Ortega attributes the change of heart among these women to aid that is offered for health services during pregnancy, as well as post-birth care for their children and the option to give up their children for adoption.

Tens of thousands more babies in Mexico City and other parts of the country are also saved each year by the National Pro-Life Committee, which uses on-site mobile units to give ultrasounds to women entering public facilities for abortions, offering them shelter and care during and following their pregnancies.

Although the Planned Parenthood Association of America, the United States’ number one abortion provider, claims that its programs seek to avoid the necessity of abortions, the organization and other abortion providers have repeatedly resisted legislative initiatives to require them to offer information on abortion alternatives, as well as ultrasound imaging and information regarding fetal development.

Planned Parenthood’s policies include offering information on adoption, but according to the organization’s most recent figures, the organization did fewer than 841 adoption referrals in 2010, while performing 330,000 abortions.

UK chief rabbi warns of danger of same-sex ‘marriage’

by Hilary White, Rome Correspondent Tue Jun 26 14:24 EST Comments (9)

LONDON, June 26, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Rewriting the definition of marriage would undermine a “sacred institution” recognized since “time immemorial,” said Britain’s Chief Rabbi, Lord Sacks, in comments to a government consultation on the issue. He warned also that attempts to exempt religious groups from conducting homosexual “weddings” would likely be challenged at the European Court of Human Rights.

Although Jonathan Sacks, a member of the House of Lords, does not represent all Jews in Britain, he is the leader of the United Synagogue, the largest synagogue body in the UK and is Chief Rabbi of the British Orthodox synagogues. He is usually referred to in the press as the “Chief Rabbi” of Britain, and as such has huge influence in politics.

The comments come in a submission to the consultation by the London Beth Din – the Chief Rabbi’s court, which rules on legal matters. It reiterated traditional orthodox teaching that homosexual activity is against Jewish law and that “gay marriage” cannot be a reality. “Marriage by definition in Jewish (Biblical) Law, is the union of a male and female,” the submission said.

“While Judaism teaches respect for others and condemns all types of discrimination, we oppose a change in the definition of marriage that includes same-sex relationships.

“Our understanding of marriage from time immemorial has been that of a union between a man and a woman. Any attempt to redefine this sacred institution would be to undermine the concept of marriage.”

Until now, Lord Sacks has largely remained aloof from the same-sex “marriage” debate in the UK. Previously he has excoriated modern European culture for its “consumerism” and materialism, saying that Europeans have chosen materialism over parenthood and that this is the source of the declining birth rate. He has also defended religious belief from secularist attacks and has said a major crisis facing Europe is indifference to religion.

In their own words: Government officials describe Bill 13’s true purpose

by Jack Fonseca Tue Jun 26 13:21 EST Comments (10)

June 26, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - So, how many of you saw the white smoke going up about a week and a half ago? You know! When the new Pope was selected?  That’s right - Pope Dalton the First.  I read it in the newspaper, so it must be true. The Toronto Sun columnist, Christina Blizzard wrote that Dalton McGuinty was not satisfied as just our secular ruler, so he took for himself the mantle of spiritual, moral and religious leader of Ontario’s Catholics.  Good bye Pope Benedict XVI! Long live Pope Dalton the First!

Yes, the Premier has ordered the Catholic Church to violate its religious beliefs by permitting homosexual activist clubs in its religious schools. Just wonderful.

Campaign Life has, from the beginning, said that Bill 13 has a sexual agenda and nothing to do with bullying prevention whatsoever.  You’ve probably all heard Catholic education leaders and even bishops deny that Bill 13 has a gay agenda. They protest, no, no. You’re wrong. It’s just about creating safe schools and reducing bullying.

Is that so? Let’s examine what the government and gay activists themselves have admitted Bill 13 is about.

Glen Murray is an openly-gay Cabinet Minister. McGuinty actually put him in charge of universities and colleges.  During a debate on Bill 13, Murray stood in the parliament, in front of all the MPPs, and read from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the section which describes homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity and intrinsically disordered.  Then he said, and I quote: “I say to you Bishops: ‘You’re not allowed to do that anymore.’”  In other words, he’s telling the bishops they cannot pass Catholic doctrine onto Catholic students any more. That’s what Cabinet Minister Glen Murray says Bill 13 will do.

In the final Bill 13 debate at Queens Park, New Democrat MPP, Cheri DiNovo addressed MPPs with a lengthy speech on Bill 13 in which she candidly described her “hope” that in the future, “the school system sees two mothers or two fathers as just as normal a family group, as a male and female.”  So, she’s clear, she hopes Bill 13 helps normalize homosexual family structures in the minds of children.

This admission is not far off from the one we got from Liberal Education Minister Laurel Broten recently during a scrum on Bill 13. A Toronto Sun journalist asked Broten why she has her children in Catholic school if she disagrees so much with Catholic teaching on homosexuality. Minister Broten replied: “This is about having schools where our students, if they draw a picture of their family and it has two moms in it or it has two dads, that they know that other pupils in that classroom understand and know that’s just as loving a family as theirs.” You notice she didn’t mention anything about bullying whatsoever? She’s talking about normalizing homosexual family structures in very early grades. She’s talking about indoctrination. Social engineering.

Dalton McGuinty himself, in a speech delivered last summer to the Toronto Gay Pride parade, told the participants that his government’s objective in imposing GSAs is to “change attitudes” about homosexuality. He described how that process “should begin in the home and extend deep into our communities, including our schools.”

What do the gay activists say about Bill 13? Well, Queer Ontario, a gay-activist organization, admits to having written the amendments to Bill 13. Who is Queer Ontario you ask? Well, they’re a group working with the McGuinty government, whose mission statement on their website includes getting Ontario to celebrate not only homosexuality, but also bondage, sadism, masochism and polyamorous relationships. That’s polygamy.  Does it encourage you to know this organization helped McGuinty write the bill? Heck, according to the Catholic school trustees there’s no gay agenda here at all, and in fact, GSAs are suitable for Catholic schools!

If you listen to the government headlines, you would believe this is all about inclusivity and treating all people with respect. Sounds nice doesn’t it?  But McGuinty’s allies are now being very open about the true goals of Bill 13.  This legislation and the Equity & Inclusive Education policy which undergirds it has nothing to do with bullying. It’s all about getting kids to reject the religious beliefs of their parents.

Jack Fonseca works with Campaign Life Coalition in Toronto and acts as a spokesman for Campaign Life Catholics. This piece is an excerpt from a talk delivered at the Toronto Pro-Life Forum on June 15-16.

Retailers’ sexualization of girls boosts child porn and human trafficking: MEP report

by Hilary White, Rome Correspondent Tue Jun 26 13:03 EST Comments (12)

Increasingly retailers and the fashion industry are portraying younger and younger girls in more sexually explicit or "mature" roles, which critics say fuels increased sexualization of children, as well as the pornography and human trafficking indust

ROME, June 26, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A grassroots movement, led by parents but including business, is building at the pan-European level to counter the hyper-sexualization of children, especially young girls, in the fashion industry and media. Retailers in Britain have admitted that they have “gone too far” and are cooperating with a program that allows parents to register complaints directly to a business association, Anna Kuchta, an organizer at the European Union told LifeSiteNews.com today.

“The conjoined explosion of music video culture, the internet, the computer games, and the commercial targeting of youth as sexual beings is having an intensely noxious effect on youth culture,” she said.

Kuchta said that the MEPs and governments are becoming aware that the sexualization of children is inseparable from hypersexualization of culture as a whole. And awareness is also growing of its connection to the associated growth of the multi-billion-Euro human trafficking and child pornography industries.

Earlier this month, a European Parliament group led by Polish MEP Joanna Skrzydlewska held hearings on the problem of the sexualization of children. The EU conference focused on a wide range of problem material not only from TV but also from video games, the Internet, newspapers, magazines and music videos. Skrzydlewska said the problem is “nothing more than imposing the sexuality of adults on young children, teenagers and especially girls when they are not ready for it emotionally, mentally or physically.”

Kuchta, Skrzydlewska’s parliamentary assistant, said that the problem has been slow to dawn on businesses, but now that more concerns are being raised they are taking steps to curtail inappropriate materials reaching young girls. Gaining the cooperation of retailers, she said, is a major step forward, since this is where the cultural rubber hits the road.

“Honestly speaking, there has been lots of response from businesses,” Kuchta said in a phone interview today. “British retail companies have created an association and a code of good practice.” They have also created a website, called Stop Shop, where they can respond directly to parents’ concerns.

There came a moment, Kuchta said, when the business leaders saw that they had gone too far and could “see that push-up bras for 12 year-olds is inappropriate”. Although the movement in the EU was originally sparked by the work of U.S. psychology researchers, Kuchta said it has really taken hold of the public mind in Britain, where the government is making the problem a priority.

A parents’ NGO based in Paris has contacted the EU Parliamentarians saying that progress is also being made in France, where government regulation already exists. The French group, Kuchta said, is working towards creating cooperation between parents, schools, business and “civil society”. The group is working on a public campaign, featuring popular pop and TV stars and the fashion magazine Marie Claire.

“The worrying phenomenon of the hypersexualization of our environment has noxious effects on young people. What is more, the hypersexualization of public spaces relies on and reinforces well established sexual stereotypes, according to which girls should be not only pretty and skinny but also sexy and hot and the boys should play the macho role and dominate the girls,” Kuchta said.

“From a very young age, girls are treated as sexual objects, their development is not respected, and the lines between childhood and adulthood are blurred.  Children, especially girls are the targets of marketing specialists who sell them age inappropriate products so they will become lifetime customers.”

In the past it was adult women who felt the imperative to look “sexy”. Now this imperative is in danger of being adopted by younger and younger girls who will inevitably face the same feelings of inadequacy, failure to live up to an unrealistic ideal.

Skrzydlewska, whose doctoral dissertation was on the subject, says that many young women now believe that “the only confidence worth having is sexual confidence” and in fact, “it seems that what this hyper-sexualized society is selling to girls is actually a caricature of sexual confidence”. Hyper-sexualized images and messages are having a profound impact, researchers have found, with girls becoming more concerned with how others perceive them than with their own interests and desires.

This self-objectification fits well, she said, with the current media focus on self- improvement, not in the form of learning new skills but of enhancing one’s physical appearance.

“By all aspects of sexualisation we are stealing childhood from children by pushing them to become ‘little adults,’ and by making them experience emotions that are difficult to deal with at their young age.” Children do not possess the ability to interpret them correctly and critically and the result is poor self-esteem, depression and even dangerous eating disorders, she said.

Pornography shapes young people’s sexual knowledge but does so by portraying sex in unrealistic ways, she says. Moreover, pornography “is increasingly dominated by themes of aggression, power and control, blurring the lines between consent, pleasure and violence.”

According to researcher Dr. Linda Papadopoulos, there has been a marked increase in the number of sites that “infantilize women” which results in changes in perceptions of child pornography among adults. When girls are dressed to resemble adult women, people may associate adult motives and even a sense of adult responsibility onto the child. Depicting young girls dressed or made up as sexually mature older women may serve to normalize abusive practices such as child abuse or sexual exploitation.

Papadopoulos cites studies showing a link between pornography use and sexual behavior. One study conducted in the US shows that 29 per cent of high school students said that pornography had influenced their sexual behavior. A European study showed that 53 per cent of young men said pornography had “ inspired” their sexual behavior.

The EU report, not yet available in English, says that pornography has led the way to more men looking at children as objects of sexual desire, “especially after they clicked on the pop-up ads for teen porn” which lead eventually into real child porn.

“For some men, the teen sites were just a stepping stone to the real thing, as they moved seamlessly from adult women to children,” the report says.

Home Office research suggests that the porn and child porn industries and human trafficking are growing in tandem. In 2003 up to 4,000 women were victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation in the UK and in 2009 the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre estimated that the potential number of child trafficking victims was 325.

The link between pornography and organized crime is a long and established one. Together pornography, human trafficking and prostitution contribute to a network of exploitation that fuels the global sex trade, Kuchta said. According to the UN, global profits from the trafficking of human beings currently stand at around US $7 billion, equivalent in monetary terms to the global trade in drugs.

Simply put, the porn industry has created a market for children, which is being supplied by human trafficking, she said.

Toronto mayor to spend Canada Day at cottage instead of Gay Pride

by Thaddeus Baklinski Tue Jun 26 11:48 EST Comments (24)

Rob Ford

TORONTO, June 26, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - For the second year in a row Toronto’s mayor Rob Ford has made it clear that he has better things to do on Canada Day than take part in Toronto’s annual “Gay Pride” events.

Mr. Ford told the National Post on June 22 he would miss Monday’s gay pride flag-raising due to a previous commitment, while he had earlier said he would not be at the Pride Parade because it takes place on Canada Day, which he usually spends with his family at the cottage.

Last year Mr. Ford told the media that spending the July 1st long weekend at the cottage is a long held family tradition, which he intends to maintain.

Ford told the Toronto Sun, “We’ve been in Huntsville for the past 30 (years), as long as I can remember, since I’ve been a little boy. I’m carrying on a tradition my father had, last year I was there during the campaign, we’re there every year.”

“My family comes first,” Mayor Ford told reporters last year. “I’m going up to the cottage. I don’t know how much more clear I can be and that’s the end of story.”

The Toronto homosexuality festival started with the flag raising yesterday and ends with the Pride Parade on Sunday, July 1, which the country celebrates as Canada Day, or the day when the British North America Act was enacted, recognizing Canada as a country.

Interspersed during the week are various marches and events including the “Trans March” on Friday, the “Dyke March” on Saturday.

Previous Toronto mayors have attended the homosexual parade but some, such as former mayor Mel Lastman, have stated it was with some trepidation. Lastman said in an interview with the National Post that while he did attend the parades while in office, he didn’t appreciate the nudity and feigned or actual sex acts that are part the event.

Though organizers have tried to portray the parade as “family-friendly,” Toronto Pride is infamous for its public displays of full nudity, sado-masochistic attire, and public sex acts.

At the flag raising on Monday, Councillor Shelley Carroll read the official proclamation on behalf of Mayor Ford. The proclamation began with, “I, Mayor Rob Ford,” which prompted a chorus of boos from the crowd, according to the National Post. It concluded, “on behalf of Toronto city council – of which I think we have quorum – do hereby proclaim June 22 to July 1 2012 as Pride Week in the city of Toronto.”

Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday remarked that he believes the pressure put on the mayor by the homosexual community to attend their events is unwarranted, and echoed a comment by openly homosexual Councilor Kristyn Wong-Tam who said, “Some may think that the LGBT community is beyond this sort of thing. We’ve already arrived. We’ve got our rights.”

“I wouldn’t say he’s turned his back on [Pride],” said Holyday. “There’s a lot of events that the mayor doesn’t attend because he simply can’t be at all places at the same time. A lot of people read more into this than there is, I think.”

Chinese woman: when I awoke my nine-month unborn baby was dead and my uterus was removed

by LifeSiteNews.com Tue Jun 26 11:10 EST Comments (68)

Hong Hu City, China, June 26, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In the wake of international coverage of the gruesome forced abortion committed on Chinese woman Feng Jianmei, another woman has stepped forward to share her story of the brutality of China’s one-child policy.

Feng Jianmei’s story burst into the international spotlight earlier this month after a photograph of her lying next to the corpse of her forcibly aborted 7-month-old unborn baby began circulating on the internet. While Chinese officials issued an “apology” to Feng for the abortion, reports since indicate that she and her family are being hounded by the government, while she has been labeled a “traitor.”

Now Zhang Wen Fang, 43, has risked retribution from the government by stepping forward to tell Chai Ling of the human rights organization All Girls Allowed about how she lost both her baby and her livelihood when officials forced her into a hospital for surgery four years ago.

According to Zhang, on May 23rd, 2008, when she was nine months pregnant, at least eleven Family Planning officials entered her home while her husband was away. Eight or nine men and three women dragged her into a van and took her to the People’s Hospital, where they induced labor despite her protests. At 8 p.m. they tried to inject an unknown chemical into her stomach, and Zhang resisted: “I pulled the needle out,” she said. “But then six men held me down so that they could give me the injection with a second needle.” Afterwards, they kept her in a room and did not let her family know where she was.

On May 25th, Zhang began to suffer contractions and then her water broke. She remembers feeling panic: “I was saying, ‘Help, help!’ but they ignored me and wouldn’t even let me out of the room.” Shortly after, she lost consciousness.

When Zhang woke up on May 26th, she was in extreme pain—and her baby was gone. “When I asked the officials and doctors what happened to the baby, if it was alive or dead, they would not tell me.” Chai Ling asked Zhang how she felt after the ordeal, and she broke down in tears. “I often have dreams about the baby,” said Zhang. “In those dreams, a child is looking at me and crying, asking, ‘Mommy, can you save me?’”

But officials did not stop there. They also removed Zhang’s uterus. The next morning, they forced Zhang’s mother to sign a form accepting that her daughter’s uterus was gone. Subsequent medical examinations revealed that the hospital had also removed her cervix, fallopian tubes, and right ovary.

Before the incident, Zhang was an entrepreneur. She began a successful trucking business and was making 1,000 RMB ($157 USD) per day. But she suffered major complications when doctors removed her uterus and is now confined to a wheelchair with severe kidney malfunction. She had to close her business because she can no longer move freely, and her marriage also broke down under the strain. “After suffering much harassment and beatings from the Family Planning Committee people, my husband left me,” said Zhang.

Zhang tried to petition the government about the incident, but Mr. Guo, the Deputy Minister of the Family Planning Committee in Hong Hu, was reportedly defiant. “I removed the uteruses of one thousand women, and no one dared to say a word to me,” Zhang reports him as saying.

Meanwhile Mr. Jiang, the Deputy Minister responsible for petitions, said about Zhang’s forced abortion and uterine removal: “We not only have the right to do this, but we must do it this way.” Liu Dong Qing, a Family Planning Committee member, signed Zhang Wen Fang’s abortion form at the hospital. Zhang Li, one of the women who helped abduct Zhang, is now the Women’s Federation Director for the village.

Last month Zhang went again to the local authorities seeking an investigation, but she was severely beaten by police. “My knees were black and blue,” she said. One officer threatened her life, saying that someone had offered him money to kill her and silence her permanently.

Zhang grew distraught as she told her story, so Ling offered to pray for her. Zhang welcomed this and joined Ling in prayer, asking Jesus to guide her life and restore her hope. “Her entire tone and demeanor changed,” Ling said thankfully. “Her voice went from despair to joyful anticipation.”

Chai Ling asked Zhang what she hoped to do by coming forward, and she replied: “I want justice. I would like to get help. I am forever handicapped. My other child is like an orphan, without much support; I am now dependent on my aging mother. I would like to see the perpetrators receive justice by law. I would like to ensure that no more families ever have to go through what I have been through, to be butchered like this.”

Daughter of Auschwitz survivor compares WHO to Hitler over abortion guide

by Katie Craine Tue Jun 26 10:34 EST Comments (17)

Peggy Clores' mother, survivor of Auschwitz, and her father, a WWII Sergeant.

HUNTINGTON, New York, June 26, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A close descendent of some of the millions of victims of the Nazi Holocaust has penned an open letter to the World Health Organization (WHO), slamming the organization for promoting the killing of unborn children in its recent abortion guide.

A new edition of the guide, “Safe abortion: technical and policy guidance for health systems,” was released this month. It details the most effective ways to kill unborn children at various stages of the unborn child’s development.

Speaking to the WHO, Peggy “Lennon” Clores of Huntington, New York writes that there is no doubt that a unborn child is human, and says: “like Hitler, you hide the evidence from the world and from your heart.”

Clores’ grandparents were killed at Auschwitz, while her mother famously survived the infamous concentration camp thanks to her musical talent: she was recruited by the Nazis to play in an orchestra in the camp.

She also criticizes the WHO for continuing to recommend abortion despite the evidence showing the physical and psychological effects that abortion has on women.

“Women deserve better,” she writes, saying “A ‘health’ organization cannot justify crimes against humanity.”

“This is beyond appalling and the extermination of human life has superceded Hitler’s crimes against humanity to incomprehensible proportions. 1.5 million lives ended annually each year in the United States alone since 1973.”

The WHO’s abortion guide includes estimates on unsafe abortion worldwide, the latest clinical recommendations to perform abortions, recommendations for “scaling up” services, and advice on policymaking and legislation.

Clores asks the WHO to “end the madness.”

“In defense of all women and in memory of my grandparents exterminated in Auschwitz Concentration Camp, I urge you to live up to your responsibility to humanity and to your name. I urge your hearts and minds to confront the atrocities and end the deadening and rationalizations of your consciences.

“I urge you to confront the reality of your ‘health’ counsel,” she concludes.
