ABORTIONIST ATTEMPTS TO RECRUIT KILLERS

VANCOUVER, BC, Oct 23 (LSN) - Abortionist Garson Romalis, a hero of the pro-abortion movement since his being shot in the leg in 1994, spoke to University of British Columbia medical students Sunday, looking to recruit abortionists. The province's first medical symposium on abortion was held at the university under heavy security. The event was kept highly secret and only open to those of anti-life mentality.

Betty Green, president of the Vancouver Right to Life Society, was saddened that UBC students heard only pro-abortion arguments. She noted that the education that medical students receive about the humanity of unborn children, along with the recently acquired ability to correct fetuses' health problems in the womb, has made new doctors reluctant to ``run around killing.''

Romalis told reporters, ``We can predict that, in the future, there's going to be a shortage of people who are prepared to provide abortion services. So we want to educate the younger people, who are coming through the medical system, to the importance of abortion... and let them know there are a lot of good things associated with performing abortion services.'' The symposium was sponsored by UBC's department of obstetrics and gynecology and was attended by about 80 medical students.

Special guests included: Dr. Penny Ballem, a vice-president of BC's Women's Hospital, Lynn Smith, former dean of law at UBC, and Dr. Vera Frinton, president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.

WASHINGTON, Oct 23 (LSN) - US president Bill Clinton's choice for new Surgeon General, Dr. David Satcher, was confirmed yesterday by the senate, inspite of his support for partial-birth abortion. The Surgeon General is the nations chief medical officer.

The Family Research Council, in a press release, noted that Dr. Satcher departs from thousands of his colleagues in the medical profession who emphatically declare that there is no medical reason to puncture the skull of a partially delivered child and vacuum the child's brains out.

"Appointing an advocate of infanticide to the bully pulpit on our country's health would send an absolutely tragic message to our nation and to the world," Family Research Council President Gary Bauer said Wednesday. "The position of the 'nation's doctor' should NOT be filled by an individual who acquiesces in a radical agenda that threatens the life and health of our nation's mothers and their unborn children. It would be a great tragedy if the members of the U.S. Senate, who voted overwhelmingly to ban legalized infanticide, endorsed as Surgeon General of the United States an individual who legitimizes the gruesome practice of partial- birth abortion," Bauer continued.

UN PROMOTES SEX ED FOR CHILDREN TO COMBAT AIDS

Catholic World News 22-Oct-97

GENEVA (CWN) - On wednesday, the United Nations' AIDS agency called on governments to institute and expand sexual education programs for children as a way to combat the spread of AIDS.

While recognizing opposition from religious groups against institutionalizing sex education, UNAIDS claimed its data shows so-called "safe sex" education does not encourage sexual activity. The group also claimed that it found higher contraceptive use among teenagers with sex education, in addition to lower pregnancy rates.

UNAIDS singled out Brazil and Zimbabwe as examples of countries doing a good job in sex education. Brazil begins teaching about AIDS to children as young as four and Zimbabwe begins education at nine years old.

"Failing to provide timely information to young people for fear of encouraging sexual activity is not a viable option," said Peter Piot, executive director of UNAIDS. "Politicians have to take tough decisions. You'll never find a consensus on this issue. But people are dying. No religion would like to lose followers because of an epidemic," he said. According to the agency's report, the number of reported new cases of AIDS worldwide rose 19 percent to 1.4 million in 1996.
