CANADIAN PRO-LIFERS APPEAL FOR LEGAL DEFENCE FUNDS

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

TORONTO, Feb 12 (LSN) - Campaign Life Coalition, the political arm of the pro-life movement in Canada, appealed this week for donations to a Legal Defence Fund to cover the growing number of legal persecutions directed against pro-lifers by pro-abortion forces. In their February newsletter, CLC notes that "threats to freedom of speech and freedom of assembly are coming right, left, and centre in Canada now, as no-protest zones are set up outside abortuaries, and pro-life public information materials are seized by police." Canadian pro-life heroes such as BC's Jim Demers, the "Show the Truth" Tour leaders, and Ontario's "Pro-Life 18" have sacrificed their own freedom and savings "to defend mothers and babies."

Please consider donating to the "CLC Legal Defence Fund," in order to give these brave souls at least some of the help they deserve. Write to CLC at 305-53 Dundas St. E. Toronto, ON M5B 1C6, or call 1-800-730-5358, or (416) 368-8479, to contribute to this extremely important cause.

IMF AND UN REVEAL PRO-ABORTION AGENDA

WASHINGTON, DC, Feb 12 (LSN) - Once again this year, US pro-life Republicans, led by New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith, said they would attach language banning abortion funding to a funding proposal for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the UN. Last year the pro-life rider made the proposed US contributions to the IMF and the UN unworkable, since the organizations are so deeply involved in the provision of abortion. The pro-life rider will similarly stop US funding this year, since the IMF and UN are holding firmly to their abortion mandate.

Interestingly, a campaign to pressure the US to fund the IMF and the UN despite their pushing of abortion has been launched. Yesterday a group of high-profile IMF supporters took out full- page ads in the New York Times, The Washington Post and the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call, urging members of Congress to approve the $18 billion for the IMF and to pay "dues" to the United Nations. The group of more than 150 supporters included former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford

LOS ANGELES, Feb 12 (LSN) - Pro-life groups cheered in victory today as California Governor Pete Wilson vetoed legislation which forced all employee insurance plans to cover contraceptives and abortifacient pills and devices such as the I.U.D. The bill (AB 160), sponsored by Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC), was put forward by Assemblyman Robert Hertzberg. Wilson warned Hertzberg that a veto was probable unless the bill was amended to give employers the ability to opt out if they object to covering contraceptives and abortifacients on religious or moral grounds. Hertzberg refused to consent to the amendment.

PHILADELPHIA, Feb 12 (LSN) - On Tuesday, Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia commented on proposed city legislation to extend city employee health and pension benefits to same-sex partners, calling it "destructive to our city's moral and social structure." "The marital relationship shared by husband and wife constitutes the only true and lasting life partnership," he said. He called on the mayor and city council to reject the measures.
