As Are All "Catholics" Who Believe In A Woman's "Right" to Abortion

TORONTO, Oct 7 (LSN) - On Monday, a media statement from Catholic Insight, a renowned Canadian Catholic magazine, charged this week that the Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Conservative leadership candidate Joe Clarke, and Ontario Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty, who all claim to be Catholics are in fact "heretics, cut off from the Catholic Church." The magazine appealed to the Vatican's recent (June 30)encyclical "Ad tendam fidem" (In defence of the Faith) for its charges.

It bases its findings on the pro-abortion statements of these politicians, noting that the Catholic Church reinforced the teaching that all Catholics who reject the Church's teachings on certain points of belief, including abortion, cease to be Catholics.

The Globe and Mail reported on August 8, 1993 that Prime Minister Jean Chretien called himself pro-choice. He has also written letters to correspondents saying "I believe abortion should be available without restriction in the first trimester of pregnancy." (April 23, 1991)

The Hon Joseph Clarke has written: "I think we must acknowledge that the opportunity to exercise choice is an indication of greater freedom." (Sept. 28, 1992)

Ontario Liberal Party Leader Dalton McGuinty said in December 1996 that he believes "in a woman's right to choose" (CBC Radio, Metro Morning, Dec 2, 1996)

Catholic Insight notes that if these politicians and all Catholics who call themselves pro-choice still hold to these positions they should be excommunicated.
