TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE BILL QUASHED IN HOUSE
OTTAWA, Oct 13 (LSN) - Last week pro-family Liberal MP Tom Wappel presented bill C-225 in the House of Commons hoping to enshrine into Canadian law the accepted definition of marriage as between an "unmarried woman and an unmarried man." The bill was ruled nonvotable by the controversial House Committee on Private Members' Business, so Canada's elected representatives could not vote the measure into law. This ruling also automatically limited debate on the bill to one hour.
During his short presentation, Wappel noted that although the courts and the legislature operate with the historic definition of marriage, this definition is only embodied in common law tradition, not in statute law. The previous and present Justice ministers told Wappel they thought the current situation did not need to be changed. Wappel pointed out, however, that "common law is, plain and simple, judge made law. Therefore, it can be changed at any time by judges. There is no statute to guide to restrain judges."
He illustrated his concern with Ontario court case Leyland and Beaulne v Ontario Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations, Attorney General of Canada, et al. in which two homosexuals sued the provincial government for not granting them a marriage licence. They lost in a 2-1 decision. Wappel observed that if the current law was so clear, the decision should have been unanimous.
ABORTED BABIES ALLOWED CHRISTIAN BURIAL
LOS ANGELES, Oct 13 (LSN) - On Friday the bodies of 54 aborted babies were handed over to religious groups for Christian burial. The pro-abortion American Civil Liberties Union attempted to file a lawsuit to prevent the burial and have the bodies incinerated. The bodies were discovered in cardboard boxes in a San Bernardino County field in 1997 having been dumped by a trucker for a Los Angeles abortuary.
The babies were buried Sunday following religious services. Bob Shelly, member of Alive Now Christian Center told the Associated Press that the babies were all given names and their own caskets and were buried in three vaults at Crestlawn Cemetery in Riverside. Commenting on the pro-aborts decision to fight the burial plans Shelley said, "it weakens their argument to have the results of abortion become visible."
HUMAN CLONING A STEP CLOSER
WASHINGTON, Oct 13 (LSN) - On Friday the Washington Post reported that scientists at New York University have successfully mixed parts of two women's ova and fertilized the resulting egg. They have attempted implantation of the embryos created in this fashion twice and are awaiting the results of the second attempt. The first embryo failed to implant in the womb.
The procedure is alarmingly similar to the touted cloning procedure in that both procedures involve the introduction of genetic material from a third party into the creation of an embryo. With cloning all the genetic info of one person is placed into the "shell" of a embryonic cell. Jamie Grifo lead researcher in the human experimentation said that the procedure was similar enough to cloning to be illegal in California.
INTERNET POLL ON FETAL EXPERIMENTATION

NOBEL PRIZE AWARDED TO BLASPHEMER
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Oct 13 (LSN) - On October 8, Jose Saramago of Portugal was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Religion News Today reports that the controversial novelist, playwright and poet produced a blasphemous play depicting a purely human Jesus used by a cynical God to create a religion of pain, death and intolerance. In the play "Jesus" has sex with Mary Magdalene. The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano described the choice of Saramago as "yet another ideologically slanted award."
US HOUSE APPROVES PARENTAL NOTIFICATION LAW
WASHINGTON, Oct 13 (LSN) - The US House of Representatives voted 224-200 on Friday to allow parents to be notified when their minor children are given prescription and abortifacient contraception. The American Family Association noted earlier that under current US law, "Title X Services, which provide contraceptive services to minors in towns across America, must be administered without the notification of a child's parents." The bill has yet to pass the US Senate and then the President may yet veto it.
DISNEY FIGHTS CHILD PROTECTION FROM PORNOGRAPHY
WASHINGTON, Oct 13 (LSN) - The American Family Association (AFA) reported Friday that the Walt Disney Company has come out in opposition to a congressional measure that would protect children from online pornography. On Wednesday the US House passed legislation requiring all web sites to verify an adult's age before allowing them to view pornographic material or other material deemed "harmful to minors."
Disney and others, including America Online, Motion Picture Association of America, and Microsoft lobbied House members against the Child On-Line Protection Act (COPLA). AFA Vice President Tim Wildmon said that "By opposing this bill, Disney demonstrates that it is insincere when it says it cares about families and children." "All the company cares about is making a buck off everything possible, including soft-core porn."
The bill still requires Senate approval.
