400 HEALTHY CHILDREN ABORTED PER YEAR DUE TO DOWN'S SUSPICION

LONDON, Aug 12 (LSN) - A story by the BBC news heralding a new pre-natal test for Down's syndrome has produced statistics on the false positive rate of the traditional tests. Based on the figures given in today's BBC news piece it can be reliably estimated that over 426 healthy babies are misdiagnosed with Down's and killed in their mother's wombs every year in England as a result of eugenic concerns. (That figure does not take into account the 1% chance of preborn babies dying from the amniocentesis test.)
The new tests for the disorder claim they can improve identification of Down's by 15% from the current 70% to 85% and reduce the false positives from the current 5% to one per cent.
