LIBERALS REFUSE IMMEDIATE ACTION ON CHILD PORN

OTTAWA, Feb 3 (LSN) - Yesterday, all but four Liberal Party MPs voted against a Reform Party motion to immediately end the legality of child pornography in BC with the use of the "notwithstanding clause." Liberal backbencher Albina Guarnieri sent an appeal to the Prime Minister signed by herself and 62 colleagues requesting immediate action on the issue. Nevertheless, the four courageous Liberal MPs were left in the lurch by all their colleagues who voted with the Cabinet against the Reform motion in response to pressure from the Party Whip

Liberal Justice Minister Anne McLellan says that the government's decision to intervene in the appeal of BC Supreme Court Justice Duncan Shaw's decision is enough. Critics object, however, that this failure to act to stop child porn in BC permits child pornographers to run rampant in the westernmost province, with the associated risk to children. "Every day that goes by with Parliament dragging its feet is another day that children risk abuse through child pornography," said Official Opposition Children and Families Critic Eric Lowther. The four Liberals who voted for the motion to immediately protect BCs children were Dan McTeague, Albina Guarnieri, Paul Steckle, and Rose-Marie Ur.
