UNITED ALTERNATIVE CONVENTION IMPRESSIONS
Cautious hope for social conservatives
OTTAWA, Feb 23 (LSN) - Pro-life, pro-family delegates to this past weekend's United Alternative convention in Ottawa are cautiously optimistic about the direction of this political movement. Many positive amendments to proposed resolutions were passed including those aimed at respecting the fundamental rights of life, freedom and property; respecting the family as the building block of society; recognizing the supremacy of Parliament in creating laws and opposing judicial activism.

There are, however, some causes for concern. Some of the main conference organizers hold strong social liberal views. Furthermore, Preston Manning continues to promote his Pontius Pilate type of approach to the abortion and homosexuality issues, whereby specific party policies are avoided and these types of issues are decided by referendum. (see text of Manning's comments on Toronto's

The final impression is that there is an opportunity for social conservatives with the UA movement. This new party process and the major changes that it proposes to our institutions might be the beginning of Canada's recovery from its accelerating collapse of respect for life and family.

GOV'T OFFICIAL ARGUES UN LAW SUPERCEDES CANADIAN LAW
VANCOUVER, BC, Feb 23 (LSN) Kathleen Mahoney, a Professor of Law at the University of Calgary, was called in to the BC Supreme Court in recent weeks as an expert witness in a case involving freedom of speech. Mahoney argued in court that the Canadian Charter of Rights is superceded by the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Despite Mahoney's evident lack of respect for the sovereignty of Canadian law, she was recently appointed chairman of the board of directors of the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development (ICHRDD), which claims to promote democracy abroad.
Mahoney's comments involved a free speech case in which the Westbank Indian Band have taken Bill Berscheid to the province's human rights commission saying that he violated the BC Human Rights Code (BCHRC). Berscheid's lawyer, Doug Christie, took the case to the Supreme Court arguing that the BCHRC denied his client free speech protections guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Mahoney countered that the Charter was subject to the UDHR, which prohibits criticism of minority groups.
Pro-life forces have been warning Canadians for years that the undemocratic process by which Canada is represented at the UN and signs on to UN treaties would undermine Canadian sovereignty and democracy, eventually suspending or superceding Canadian law.
TEEN TARGETED PRO-LIFE SITE
CHARLESTON, SC, Feb 23 (LSN) AbortionTV is the latest tool for pro-life groups in the U.S. to inform youth about the horrors of abortion. The innovative site's purpose is to educate young adults about the true nature of abortion through videos and photographs. Movies such as The Silent Scream and Hard Truth are instantly accessible from the AbortionTV web site for viewing.
While many pro-lifers will find the site's information about contraception objectionable, they will find the videos and photographs of abortions to be an indispensable resource.

PARENTAL NOTIFICATION LAW STICKS IN VIRGINIA
WASHINGTON, Feb 23 (LSN) On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal brought by abortionists to nix a Virginia law requiring parental notification prior to abortions for minors. The law merely requires that unmarried girls under 18, and not living on their own, inform at least one of their parents no less than 24 hours before having an abortion. The law does not require them to get their parents' consent for the abortion.
Exceptions to the reporting requirement include cases when the abortionist believes the young mother is a victim of abuse or neglect, and situations where the child can prove to a judge that she is mature enough to handle the decision on her own. Despite the weakness of the legislation, the abortion industry fought the case all the way to the highest court. The mainstream media has yet to make the abortion industry explain how its position in the case contributes to the health and safety of girls and young women.
