UNICEF BY-PASSES CANADIAN PARENTS AND LEGISLATURES
Teams up with Elections Canada to conduct children's only vote
OTTAWA, July 13 (LSN) - To mark the tenth anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF Canada and Elections Canada have teamed up for "Canada's first national election for the rights of youth." The vote to take place in schools on November 19,1999 will have Canadian children under 18 vote from among ten rights "for the right they feel is most important to them."
The ten rights "candidates" to be voted on will be culled from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and submitted to Elections Canada in September, one month prior to the vote. While the UN Convention has many positive aspects, one very disturbing one is its proposal to prohibit spanking as a form of discipline, which in practice has shown to be a major focus of UN committees dealing with countries which have agreed to the Convention. See http://www.lifesite.net/clc/national_news/news_1197.html#Parental
The Convention on the rights of the Child has many other implications which greatly disturb family organization leaders. This vote in the schools appears to be a consciousness-raising exercise to make Canada's children aware of their supposed rights under the UN Convention to claim personal authority on all moral, educational, religious and many other matters.
The allowance of a UNICEF sponsored program in Catholic, Christian and Orthodox Jewish schools will also bring controversy since UNICEF has become a prominent partner in the abortion, contraception and sterilization programs of the U.N. The resulting withdrawal of a Vatican contribution to the UN's children's organization three years ago led to many Catholic schools abandoning the traditional practice of UNICEF fundraising via Halloween boxes.
There are many other serious implications of this UN exercise in Canada which pro-family organizations must address, not the least of which will be the tremendous cost of this so called national vote.
