PARLIAMENT TO VOTE TODAY ON DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE
OTTAWA, June 8 (LSN) - The federal parliament will vote today on a Reform sponsored motion to restrict the definition of marriage to mean the "union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others." The move comes in reaction to the recent M vs H Supreme Court of Canada decision, which pressures the Ontario government to provide spousal benefits to homosexual couples.
The votable motion reads as follows: "That, in the opinion of this House, it is necessary, in light of public debate around recent court decisions, to state that marriage is and should remain the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others, and that Parliament will take all necessary steps to preserve this definition of marriage in Canada."
The Canada Family Action Coalition has urged pro-family supporters to call their MP's and ask them to support the motion. Rumours around Ottawa suggest that a gay-rights omnibus bill may be introduced in parliament by the government in September. Pro-family forces want to ensure that a redefinition of marriage is not included in the reforms.
They also want to use a positive vote on Reform's motion as a tool to beat back any future attempts by Canada's courts to redefine marriage for the government. Justice Minister Anne McClellan told the House of Commons today that the government does support the Reform Party's motion, claiming that it has never been interested in seeing marriage redefined in law.
