UN PREDICTS DIRE UNDERPOPULATION PROBLEMS
UNITED NATIONS, June 30 (LSN) - Yesterday the Population Division of the UN's Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) released a chart on population aging. The UN's population projections indicate that "one of every 10 persons is now aged 60 years or older. By 2050, the United Nations projects that 1 person of every 5 will be aged 60 years or older. By 2150, it will be 1 of every 3. The number of persons in this age group is now nearly 600 million. It is projected to grow to almost 2 billion by 2050, when the population of older persons will outnumber the population of children (0-14 years)."
The document notes that the demographic aging will have severe implications in terms of social support for elderly people. "The potential support ratio, which indicates the dependency burden on potential workers, is falling," says the report. "Between 1999 and 2050, the potential support ratio will decline from 5 to 2 working age persons per older person in more developed regions and by an even larger fraction in less developed regions, from 12 to 4, thus affecting social security schemes, particularly traditional pay- as-you-go systems where current workers pay for the benefits of current retirees."
