REFORM PARTY HEALTH CRITIC SPOUTS UN POPULATION PROPAGANDA

OTTAWA, Oct 13 (LSN.ca) - Dr. Keith Martin, Reform's Opposition Health Critic, issued a press release yesterday commemorating the birth of the world's six billionth citizen. During his speech, Martin stunned listeners by spouting the long-debunked alarmist Malthusean arguments. He said: "as the world's population continues to grow unchecked, we are threatening the long- term survival of all species on the planet, including our own."

"Pollution and the depletion of non-renewable resources," he continued, "will potentially result in conflict." Encouraging population control, Martin said, "Canada must invest in equal access to the availability of safe, effective birth control to ensure long-term environmental sustainability." Soon "it will be too late to act once our resources have disappeared."

The overpopulation myth has been refuted ever since it reared its ugly head, but politically correct forces dominating academia and the mainstream media tend to suppress competing views. Now, in fact, the impending threat of global population decline is gaining recognition. Even the United Nations has acknowledged the trend.

In August, the prestigious journal Atlantic Monthly contained a report on demographics called "The Population Surprise". The article warns about the world's fast approaching depopulation disaster, noting that "fifty years from now the world's population will be declining, with no end in sight." The latest entry in the list of reports on population implosion is today's National Post, which carries a story noting that "when the higher mortality rates of developing countries are considered, fertility rates are at, or below, replacement levels in as many as 97 countries." The article by Susan Martinuk warns that "The world's demographers, and even the head of the United Nations Population Fund, agree that no country in history has been able to increase birth rates once they fall below replacement levels." The Oct. 9 Hamilton Spectator contained a lengthy special report with many quotes debunking overpopulation hysteria. One noted that our aging, non-reproducing population "is going to create a huge under-population problem."

Martin is due to be appointed Reform's Foreign Affairs Critic on January 1st, 2000. In view of his position on population issues which appear to be identical to that of the Liberal government, one has to wonder how he could be an effective critic of the government's foreign policy.
