BC SCHOOL BOARDS REJECT UNICEF CAMPAIGN
VANCOUVER, Oct 14 (LSN.ca) - Following complaints from parents that the upcoming (Nov 19) UNICEF child rights vote in schools would undermine their rights and responsibilities as parents, some BC school boards have disallowed the vote while others are requiring school leadership to solicit parents' views before authorizing the vote. Abbotsford, Chilliwack and the Fraser Cascade school districts have disallowed the vote in their schools, according to a report in the Vancouver Sun today.
John Smith, chairman of the Abbotsford board said "Many very reasonable, very normal and very rational parents don't like this." Smith noted that the child rights convention, on which the vote is based is controversial since it includes "rights" for children such as freedom of association and freedom to receive information, which Smith says parents would want some control over.
Danielle St. John, a spokesman for UNICEF in BC complained: "This is purely educational, and it's frustrating that it's being seen as political." It is interesting to watch this international organization discredit itself with such comments despite the clear evidence to the contrary.
