OTTAWA, Apr 28 (LSN.ca) - Ontario Tory strategist Tom Long officially declared his candidacy for leader of the Canadian Alliance party yesterday, carefully dancing around questions on abortion and homosexuality. While Long claims to be pro-life and pro-family, a careful examination of his statements show his words to be shallow. The Globe and Mail reports that "Mr. Long went out of his way to insist that he would never allow his own personal views to influence government policy. ... He does not believe Parliament should concern itself with such matters." Pro-life, pro-family leaders warn that this is a dangerous position.

The only promise Long made with regard to abortion is that he would encourage adoption. Regarding any other pro-life measure he said: "I live in the real world and I know there are issues upon which we do have common ground and we can make an urgent, real difference." The National Post points out that Long has to play up his pro-life convictions so as not "to offend social conservatives in the West - thousands of voting members - who believe the government should step in to ban abortion."
