BOSTON, Apr 12 (LSN.ca) - LifeSite reported in April that professor Charles Baron of Boston College would be a speaker at the pro-euthanasia World Conference on Assisted Dying. When LifeSite readers contacted Fr. William P. Leahy, President of Boston College to present their concerns, Rev. Leahy responded: "he is a tenured member of our Law School faculty, and he has the freedom to offer his own opinions on matters related to his discipline."

Defending Baron's pro-euthanasia presentation Leahy said: "I think for a university to be true to its name, it must recognize the value of pluralism and protect freedom of inquiry." However Leahy's comments are somewhat contradictory since he also says that "to be an authentic university, we must strive to be an institution where ... intellectual excellence and religious commitment are integrated." Apparently those qualities cannot be integrated in one individual. Leahy also says, "professor Baron definitely does not reflect the views of this institution," but nevertheless backs Baron in his decision to use his title as "Professor of Law at Boston College" to promote his pro-euthanasia talk. Promotional material about the conference on the website of the Hemlock society notes that "Baron, author of several major articles on assisted dying and Professor of Law at Boston College, (will) explain how the prohibition model makes a mockery of the law."
