ENVIRONMENTALISM TO BE NEW WORLD RELIGION?
UNITED NATIONS, Aug 30 (LSN.ca) - Stoking fears that high-level organizers of the World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders, taking place at this time in New York, want to subsume all religions under the banner of an environmentalist ethic, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) announced the release of Earth and Faith: A Book of Reflection for Action on Tuesday, the day the conference began at the United Nations' New York headquarters.
Maurice Strong, a Canadian and a senior advisor to UN secretary General Kofi Annan, is one of the main organizers of the religious summit. He is renowned for his environmentalist zeal, having organized the U.N.'s Rio Earth Summit in 1992, one of the outcomes of which was an "Earth Charter". Mr. Strong "compares his charter, a paragon of New Age individualism and megalomania, to the Ten Commandments and predicts a day when 'everyone will try to base their lives on these principles and only by doing that can we ensure that the Earth will remain a safe and hospitable home for those who follow us on it'," writes Report magazine (see Monday's Special Report). The Earth Charter is being given prominent exposure at the current religious summit. Mikhail Gorbachev is also a principal mover behind the Earth Charter and the convenor of the upcoming State of the World Forum in New York. The Charter will undoubtedly also be given prominence at that large meeting of world leaders.
Earth and Faith was published by UNEP and the Interfaith Partnership for the Environment. "The 80-page book provides an overview of the critical environmental issues facing the world today, as well as the UN's efforts to tackle them. It also explores the theme of human responsibility to protect the natural world from the perspective of various faiths," reports the U.N. Mr. Strong was the founder and first head of UNEP (1972-1975). The international religious summit ends tomorrow.
