SOCIAL ENGINEERING STUDY USES RADIO FOR POPULATION CONTROL PROPAGANDA
CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Dec 15, 2000 (LSN.ca) - A social engineering study was done in St. Lucia to encourage a population control mentality in the heavily Catholic Caribbean-island nation. The study was conducted by US researcher Peter W. Vaughan from Population Communications International. It involved the creation of an entertainment-education radio soap opera, geared to promote politically correct notions such as the use of contraception and the belief that small families are better than large.
Vaughan, visiting assistant professor at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, aired the radio show in conjunction with researchers from the RARE Center, the Government of St. Lucia, and with the cooperation of St. Lucia Planned Parenthood Association. "Apwe Plezi", was broadcast from February 1996 to September 1998 in St. Lucia. The results of the social engineering experiment held promise for the population controllers.
A report in the current International Family Planning Perspectives, notes that the program instilled "trust (in) family planning workers," and listeners "considered a significantly lower number of children the ideal (2.5 vs. 2.9)." Moreover, "fourteen percent of listeners reported having adopted a family planning method as a result of listening to the program."
