COMMUNIST CHINA WANTS GORE FOR US PRESIDENT
BEIJING, Feb 8 (LSN.ca) - The Herald Tribune reports today that Chinese officials have made it clear that their preferred candidate for the president of the US is vice-president and Democrat front-runner, Al Gore. The Chinese suggest that the main reasons concern Taiwan and stability. However, observers suggest that the communist government knows that Gore would continue the Clinton policy of favouritism for China despite the country's brutal human rights oppression including the notorious one-child policy

BANKRUPTCY LAW MORE DANGEROUS THAN EXPECTED
WASHINGTON, Feb 8 (LSN.ca) - The bill passed by the US Senate Wednesday which declares that people found to have violated laws protecting abortuaries cannot escape fines or civil judgments against them through bankruptcy is much more dangerous than it appears, say critics. The measure, which passed overwhelmingly in the Senate (80-17), contains language that "goes far beyond the discrete issue of violence at abortion clinics," warned Senator Orrin Hatch during the Senate debate. He noted that the bill contained vague language which would allow the legislation to be used against pro-lifers who not only committed an offence but also those who "attempted" or who were "alleged" to have committed offences. Moreover the offences include "harassment of, intimidation of, interference with [and] obstruction of" abortionists and their collaborators.
Hatch urged a no vote: "I urge my colleagues to read the actual text of the amendment before they vote. If they believe they are voting on an amendment that strictly covers acts of violence at abortion clinics, they are mistaken. Who knows how this amendment is going to be applied otherwise? The bankruptcy law already takes care of violence, abortion clinic violence, if you will. It does not discharge that in bankruptcy."

JEWISH PHARMACIST FIRED FOR REFUSING TO SELL CONDOMS
MIAMI, Florida, Feb 7 (LSN.ca) - In a case that highlights the urgent need for conscience legislation, Pharmacist Hillel Hellinger, a Hassidic Jew and father of nine, is suing Eckerd Pharmacy for discrimination against his religion since the pharmacy fired him over his refusal to sell condoms, an action that would violate his religious beliefs.
"Condoms are not supposed to be used by a Jewish man because the sperm has to enter the woman. In the Jewish court of law you are not allowed to waste seed. ... It's a violation for me to help somebody to do something wrong," argues Hellinger. He said that the pharmacy "could easily have accommodated him by moving the condom rack to another part of the store, or by allowing him to direct condom customers ... to the cashier at the front of the store." In fact, other pharmacies have moved the condom racks away from the pharmacy section.
However, a lawyer for Eckerd argued that "condom patrons are embarrassed, that they like the display at the back of the store and feel more comfortable making the purchase from a pharmacist rather than a young cashier up front." Arguments in the case began Monday.

SPAIN COMMENCES CHEMICAL BABY KILLING WITH RU-486
MADRID, Feb 7 (LSN.ca) - On Monday Spanish public hospitals and some private clinics began selling the deadly chemical abortion drug RU-486 (Mifegyne). Agence France Press reports that the health ministry has said that the pills will not be available in pharmacies but only in hospitals and clinics. Furthermore, the 50 Euros which will be charged for the drugs will be reimbursed at tax payers expense if the abortion takes place in a hospital.
The moral decline in Spain began in the sixties when the birth rate of the once strongly Catholic country began to plummet. LifeSite reported in January that Spain now has the lowest birth rate in the world (1.07) as indicated by data released at the end of last year. The 1999 fecundity survey by the National Statistics Institute (INE) confirmed that, in the past 28 years, Spain's birth rate has halved. The INE report reveals that in university- educated women aged 25-34, the birth rate is only 0.33.
In 1985 Spain permitted the killing of children in the womb up to the eighth week of pregnancy in cases of rape, fetal deformation and health risk to the mother.

CONTROVERSIAL BISHOP PROMOTES DANGEROUS "GAY RIGHTS" LAW
DETROIT, Feb 8 (LSN.ca) - The auxiliary bishop of Detroit, Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, whose stance on homosexuality is seen by many as contrary to that of the Vatican, is supporting a city ordinance that may land the church in court on charges of "discrimination." Bishop Gumbleton held a rally Sunday at St. James Church in Ferndale in support of the measure which would ban discrimination against homosexuals regarding employment, housing, public accommodations, and public services.
Catholic World News reported yesterday that the measure does not allow for exemptions for religious organizations. "If passed violators, including churches that refuse to hire homosexuals for positions in charities, educational positions, day care centers, or even the clergy, would face $500 fines and civil lawsuit," reported CWN.
LifeSite reported in November 1997 that Bishop Gumbleton caused an uproar in the Catholic community when he signed a petition in support of the Catholic-bashing show "Nothing Sacred." The Catholic League described the show in the following manner: "The goal is to put a positive spin on Catholic priests who prefer Hollywood's libertine vision of sexuality to the moral teachings of the Church. This propaganda is fodder for dissenting Catholics and anti- Catholic bigots alike."
POPE'S SOLUTION TO "WORRISOME DEMOGRAPHIC" PROBLEM
VATICAN CITY, Feb 8 (LSN.ca) - Speaking on Sunday, the Italian national pro-life day, Pope John Paul II addressed a large crowd in St. Peter's Square. The pope noted "the worrisome demographic decline registered in recent years" and called for a "renewal in Italian society." "Above all it is up to married couples to re-establish a culture of love and life, rediscovering the mission of parenthood assumed on their wedding day."
