MARCH OF WOMEN HEAD SPEAKS AT UN FOR ALL WESTERN WOMEN
UNITED NATIONS, July 7 (LSN.ca) - Fran¨oise David, president of the Quebec Federation of Women (FFQ) - the organization responsible for the World March of Women 2000, spoke to the General Assembly at the United Nations on June 9 after the close of the Bejing +5 conference. In her speech she claimed to represent all women from North America and Europe, specifically those of all faiths. "I am here to represent the women of North America and both Eastern and Western Europe. I speak in the name of the diverse women who live in our region: young and older women, of all faiths, ethnic origin and social conditions, white women and women of colour, native women, heterosexual and lesbian women, migrant women and disabled women," she said.
In a fashion typical of UN feminists, David cleverly couched demands for radical feminist causes, specifically abortion, within demands for seriously needed actions to fight poverty and various forms of violence against women. In the name of all the women she claimed to represent, she also used language fully understood at the UN to mean abortion. "States must remember that women have an inalienable right to make choices about their lives and their sexual and their reproductive health. We demand that these rights be recognized," she said.
Obviously referring to the great success of pro-life, pro-family forces at the meeting, she said, "Now that the Special Session of the General Assembly is over and now that it is clear how difficult it is to make progress when it comes to women's right to equality and freedom, we want to say loudly and clearly that our struggle will not end here." She goes on to "demand another gathering, in 2005, a fifth world conference on women."
David also notes that the "World March of Women in the Year 2000 will culminate here at the United Nations on October 17th" where the petitions for the demands will be presented to Kofi Anan.
