PROMINENT CATHOLIC BISHOPS CENSORED ON MARCH OF WOMEN
VANCOUVER, July 13 (LSN.ca) - The feminist World March of Women 2000 has caused serious division in the Catholic Church in Canada.Ê Efforts by executives within Catholic organizations to censor prominent bishops who oppose the March are increasing. Recently LifeSite obtained a copy of a letter sent out by Jennifer Leddy, co-director of the Catholic Organization for Life and Family (COLF), the pro-life arm of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Knights of Columbus.
On official COLF letterhead, containing the name of Archbishop Adam Exner who publicly opposed the March, Leddy's letter unreservedly defended the March. She failed to mention in her letter that some Canadian bishops, including Bishop Exner, the most prominent director of COLF, strongly oppose the March; the letter cited march supporter Bishop Gerald Wiesner. Members of the Knights of Columbus are outraged at the letter since they have not endorsed the March.
LifeSite reported June 28 that Bishop Nicola De Angelis, spiritual advisor to the Ontario Catholic Women's League wrote a letter to president Betty Anne and all Ontario CWL leaders. He expressed concern that a kit sent to members on the upcoming convention quoted only those bishops who support the March of Women. In her response to the bishop, Brown wrote "I am sorry that you promulgated your opinion without passing it by me first." Later during the Ontario CWL convention when bishop De Angelis could not attend due to hospitalization, a representative he sent to the meeting was not allowed to speak.
The website of the Catholic Organization for Development and Peace also quotes bishop Wiesner in defense of the March and again fails to mention that any bishops oppose it.
