Hysteria Over Abortionist Stabbing Continues

VANCOUVER, July 14 (LSN.ca) - On Wednesday, the Vancouver Province received a phone call from a man claiming responsibility for the stabbing of abortionist Garson Romalis. "I'm calling on behalf of the Baby Liberation Army and I have a message. . . We are responsible for the stabbing and we're sorry that we didn't do a better job."

A 1994 report of the government's Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) speculated that the fire and explosion at the Morgentaler abortuary in 1992 was believed to have been committed "by a left-wing activist to make the government take action against the anti-abortionists." This evidence, combined with the known hostility of radical leftist groups such as Anti-racist Action towards the pro-life movement, enforce the theory that at least some of the five violent incidents in Canada may have had objectives to smear pro-lifers. There is increasing speculation that the call from the leftist sounding Baby Liberation Army was contrived for such a purpose, especially since it came shortly after Campaign Life Coalition made its $10,000 reward for information about the stabber.

Pro-abortion extremist interest in portraying pro-lifers as violent

Discrediting pro-lifers by contriving to associate them with violence is a general tactic of left-wing abortion extremists. For example, Canadian self-proclaimed researcher Will Offley, a strident pro-abortionist, prides himself on being an expert on the Canadian pro-life movement. After the shooting of abortionist Barnett Slepian, he concocted an elaborate scheme to try to convince police that the Christian Heritage Party was tied in to the shooting. Offley's strategy to discredit the pro-life movement stemmed from similar efforts to discredit pro-family Christian groups. As a homosexual activist he developed a strategy to divide Christians while advancing the homosexual agenda. Fundamental to this strategy were attempts to link vocal defenders of family values with violence to encourage less outspoken Christians to deny any association with, or support for such people and groups. "Part of any strategy (to defeat pro-family groups) has to be to deny the Christian label to (these) groups ... to expose their agenda as being a right-wing agenda, not a Christian one," he said.

Just yesterday, Offley's analysis of "the theocratic politics of Campaign Life Coalition, B.C's most influential anti-choice organization" was sent out on an anarchist leftist newsgroup. Also sent was Offley's propaganda piece "The Anti-Choice & Clinic Violence: A Backgrounder."

Hysteria continues

In addition to the telephone call and early intense reactions to the non-lethal stabbing of Romalis, other developments are adding to the hysteria. Dr. Ellen Wiebe, the RU-486 experimenter allegedly received a telephone death threat after the stabbing. Calling into question the credibility of its programs, America's Most Wanted television program will feature an episode on the wounding incident. The Toronto Star today ran an exceptionally nasty editorial cartoon indicating that the Stockwell Day leadership win motivated the stabber to act.

Interestingly, abortionist Henry Morgentaler agrees with the Campaign Life Coalition stance that the incident's significance is being greatly exaggerated. The July 13 Toronto Sun quotes him as saying "I don't think this should be blown out of proportion. It's an isolated incident". He is also noted in the Globe and Mail as urging "everyone to calm down" and stating "Don't make too much of it".

Possible objectives becoming revealed

Pro-life leaders have noted that more support for abortion usually follows the aggressive exploitation of these incidents by pro-abortion advocates. It is now becoming clearer what the goals of the current campaign may be.

In addition to the immediate objective of undermining Stockwell Day, the Alliance Party and the general trend towards social conservatism, there appear to be other specific objectives.

The July 13 Globe and Mail notes that B.C. Attorney General Andrew Petter is "open to suggestions about strengthening B.C's laws to protect doctors...". The province's NDP government is a militantly pro-abortion regime. Past experience in Canada suggests that they are likely hoping for the stabbing hysteria to justify ramped-up abortion funding and heavy suppression of pro-life expression.

A July 14 Globe story on reaction to the Romalis incident makes the point that "abortions are not performed in Prince Edward Island and access to them in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Manitoba is limited". There is also reference to the long distances rural Saskatchewan women must travel to have their preborn children aborted. These and other abortion limits in Canada have been a source of on-going anger for abortion advocates who believe all legislatures should be forced to provide full-funded, full access abortion services. The curious mention of the limits in the Globe story seems to signal that sufficient response to the stabbing could be used to force more abortion access in the offending provinces.
