Bishop Reaffirms Support for CWL's Position Against March

HAMILTON, May 30 (LSN.ca) - A resolution on the March of Women 2000 was overwhelmingly passed at the 80th Convention of the Hamilton Diocesan Council of the Catholic Women's League on Saturday May 28th 2000. The diocese has 12,500 of the 105,000 members of the Catholic Women's League of Canada. The resolution called for the National Council of the Catholic Women's League of Canada to "issue a public statement of withdrawal of its support and endorsement of the World March of Women 2000."

At the Hamilton CWL dinner on Sunday evening Bishop Anthony Tonnos of Hamilton reaffirmed his support for the position of the diocesan CWL against the march.

After mentioning its commitment to fighting poverty and violence the resolution points out that the CWL policy manual actually forbids the CWL from taking part in the march. It also points out the problems associated with the march regarding abortion, homosexuality, education, and support for controversial UN treaties.
