Appearance was Arranged to Support Local Liberal Candidate

BARRIE, Nov 1 (LSN.ca) - Prime Minister Jean Chretien was appealing to the Catholic vote in Ontario last week as he spoke at a Catholic high school in Barrie. Asked a question on abortion by one student Chretien responded by identifying himself as a "Roman Catholic" and then proceeding to defend a pro-abortion position. Speaking at St. Joseph's Catholic High School on Oct 30, Chretien said, "For me, I'm a Roman Catholic. Personally, I don't have to, you know, I'm not at the age anymore to have my wife have abortion, but the reality ... is that it is the choice of not the husband to decide in my judgment, it is the judgment of the woman according to the values that this person have."

LifeSite contacted the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board which was responsible for allowing the pro-abortion politician to speak to the school's students. Dianne Legg, Communications Officer for the board told LifeSite that there was no consideration given to Chretien's stand on abortion when he was allowed to speak at the school. Rather the appearance was welcomed to "provide support to the local Liberal candidate of Barrie."

Legg told LifeSite she was present at Chretien's talk with the students. When asked if the board was concerned that Catholic students were given such bad example since Chretien had called himself Catholic and went on to promote abortion, Legg responded that they not focused on that issue and that it was "a wonderful experience." When asked if there was any remedial action taken by school officials to clarify that Catholics must be pro-life, she responded that no such action was planned and said, "you are focusing only on one part . . . we focused on the whole event . . . it was a positive educational experience for students."

Legg noted that she was not aware of any complaints to the school or school board about the incident.

PIONEERS OF ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION ADMIT FAILURE

Success rates no higher than 13 to 17 per cent, says geneticist

MILAN, Italy, Nov. 1 (LSN.ca) - There is a growing scientific movement against artificial insemination, says a pioneer in the genetic field. Father Angelo Serra told a pro-life conference in Turin, Italy that the technique fails in as many as 87 per cent of cases and has grave psychological consequences. Zenit News reported that Fr. Serra has been an assistant to Nobel Prize winner Renato Dulbecco, and is professor emeritus of human genetics at the Catholic University of Rome.

He said success rates of no higher than 13 to 17 per cent still exist after 20 years of experimentation, and 50 per cent of frozen embryos are never gestated. This has prompted various practitioners of artificial insemination to join a movement against it and create an opinion group with Chicago's Institute for Science, Law and Technology.

Meanwhile, Nicola Garcea, a professor of endocrinology at the Catholic University of Rome, warned of experimentation taking place with the fertilization of gametes obtained from preborn girls aborted in their fourth or fifth month of existence. This has the potential of producing a child of a person who was never born.

CASE FOR ABORTION-BREAST CANCER LINK STRENGTHENED

60 Per Cent Increase Cited

LONDON, England, Nov. 1 (LSN.ca) - Recent surges in breast cancer rates among 40-year-old British women are being attributed to abortions performed after the 1967 Abortion Act was passed. Zenit News reported that Patrick Carroll, director of the Pension and Population Research Institute, says in a research paper that there is also likely to be a 60 per cent increase in the disease over the next 20 years for the same reason.

"My conclusion is based on the figures for abortion, breast cancer and fertility published by the Office of National Statistics," says Carroll. "Age at first birth and childlessness, both relevant factors, have not contributed to the rise . The greater incidence of abortion is probably the main factor." He added the conclusion is supported by data from Scotland, Sweden and Finland, and that his predictions are likely to be confirmed when more figures are released by the national statistics office.

The National Review reports that the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act of 2000 will not pass Congress before members adjourn this weekend. The House version of the bill, which would have provided federal protection to living, fully born babies who survive abortions, passed last month by a vote of 380 to 15. The Senate killed the bill when Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota objected to the unanimous-consent request to pass the bill.
