MONTREAL, Nov 6 (LSN.ca) - Rumours that suggested Prime Minister Jean Chretien would make the election about abortion and run a "state vs church" campaign seem to be verified with yet another attack by Chretien on Stockwell Day's pro-life convictions. Speaking to a Quebec Liberal women's group he said, "There was a decision in 1988 of the Supreme Court [striking down Canada's abortion law]. We have had social peace in Canada on the question of abortion," he added. "Mr. Day is proposing to have a referendum on that. I think I don't agree. I [don't] think that the women will be very happy with that."
Campaign Life Coalition, the political wing of Canada's pro-life movement, asked in a press release today "How does the current Prime Minister sleep at night?" The release notes "Chretien was there in 1969 working with his friend and boss, Pierre Trudeau, to open the floodgates to mass killing of those waiting to be born. Chretien was there in 1988 applauding the decision to strike down the law leaving Canada in a state of lawlessness and the babies, in utero, totally defenseless.
"Chretien has carried out his campaign to continue the slaughter throughout his political career. Two million dead babies are a shameful legacy. Jean Chretien's concept of social peace demonstrates how far removed the Liberal leader is from what is really happening in Canada. There will never be peace for Canada or for Jean Chretien because two million victims cry out for justice. Mother Teresa said it best in 1979: 'The greatest destroyer of peace today is the crime against the innocent unborn child'."
CLC concluded: "Does any political leader in this election campaign have the intestinal fortitude to take an uncompromising stand for life?"
It is noteworthy that the Prime Minister, who constantly claims to be a Catholic, has been rebuked twice this year by Ottawa Archbishop Marcel Gervais for his pro-abortion statements.
CA PARACHUTE CANDIDATE NANCY BRANSCOMBE SEVERELY CRITICIZED
London CA member accuses her of "sleazy, backroom double-dealing"
LONDON, Ontario Nov 6 (LSN.ca) - LifeSite has rarely encountered such intense hostility directed towards a Canadian Alliance candidate as that which has developed around Nancy Branscombe. The controversy developed during her Oct. 21 failed Peterborough nomination bid and her subsequent Oct. 26 instant win of the London-North-Centre riding. The most severe criticism has come from other Alliance supporters who see her as bringing the worst of old party, power-at-any-cost politics into the Alliance.
Nancy Branscombe was not successful as the Reform candidate for Peterborough during the 1997 federal election. In response to the CLC election questionnaire, she indicated that she considered herself to be pro-choice, did not oppose the sale and listing of the abortion drug RU-486 and supported legalized doctor-assisted suicide. During that election she was also the Reform party's organizer for 23 Ontario ridings and became known by the pro-life community for her intense social liberal views. Branscombe was one of the party chiefs who forced the removal of a reform candidate's campaign manager simply because the manager was pro-life.

POPE SAYS CHRISTIAN POLITICIANS CAN NEVER SUPPORT ANTI-LIFE LAWS
Life and Family Top Legislative Priorities
VATICAN, Nov 6 (LSN.ca) - At the Jubilee of Politicians this weekend, Pope John Paul II was explicit in his statements warning politicians against supporting anti-life laws. In his formal address on Saturday he referred to laws which do "not respect the right to life - from conception to natural death - of every human being, whatever his or her condition - healthy or ill, still in the embryonic stage, elderly or close to death."
The pope said, "Christian legislators may neither contribute to the formulation of such a law nor approve it in parliamentary assembly, although, where such a law already exists, it is licit for them to propose amendments which would diminish its adverse effects." He added that "The same must be said with regard to all laws which would do harm to the family, striking at its unity and its indissolubility, or which would give legal validity to a union between persons, including those of the same sex, who demand the same rights as the family founded upon marriage between a man and a woman."
The statement by the Pope clears up debate even among pro-lifers as to the promotion of abortion laws in countries where no law on abortion is in place.

POPE TO EUROPE'S LEADERS: RIGHT TO LIFE IS MOST BASIC RIGHT
VATICAN, Nov 6 (LSN.ca) - In an address to delegates to the ministerial conference of the Council of Europe Friday, Pope John Paul II reminded the politicians that "the right to life" is the "most basic" right of all. During his talk he noted the modern problems of separating human rights from the true nature of the human person and the problem of interpreting rights solely from an individualistic perspective, with little consideration of the role of the family as "the fundamental unit of society".
The pope called it a "paradox that, on the one hand, the need to respect human rights is vigorously affirmed while, on the other, the most basic of them all - the right to life - is denied." The pope called it a "radical contradiction" that most European states have done away with the death penalty for criminals while allowing the death penalty for innocent unborn children. It is the pope's "fervent hope" that society will recognize that "enormous injustice is committed when innocent life in the womb of the Mother is not safeguarded."

SIAMESE TWIN SEPARATION OPERATION UNDERWAY TODAY
LONDON, Nov 6 (LSN.ca) - After the British high court's rejection of a pro-life challenge to allowing doctors to separate joined Siamese twins Jodie and Mary, the hospital where the children were kept has announced it is proceeding with the separation operation. The procedure will necessarily result in the death of at least one of the twins, and will take about 15 hours to perform.

Actress Jane Fonda, whose recent separation and claimed conversion to Christianity had many hoping for a change in her views, has disappointed Christians. The Associated Press reported Friday that Fonda donated $11.7 million to a new pro-abortion political action group in September. Fonda said she funded the effort because: "I wanted to do more to help voters understand reproductive rights and related issues so that they could make informed decisions when they go to the polls."
