CANADA'S LEADING ABORTIONIST ENDORSES "CATHOLIC" PRIME MINISTER

OTTAWA, Nov 21 (LSN.ca) - Henry Morgentaler, Canada's most notorious abortionist, has endorsed Prime Minister Jean Chretien and his Liberal Party for the upcoming election. In Morgentaler's Nov 20th statement delivered in a press conference today, the father of abortion in Canada says: "We know that Prime Minister Jean Chretien has promised to protect women's right to reproductive freedom. The Liberal party can be considered a pro-choice party, although it has about two dozen MP's who are anti-choice. It is to the credit of Mr. Chretien that the anti-choice members were kept in check and did no damage."

The foregoing quote while supportive of Mr. Chretien is a scathing indictment against the Prime Minister since he claims to be a "good Catholic." To date, only one Canadian bishop, Archbishop Marcel Gervais of Ottawa, has publicly criticized Prime Minister Chretien in his claim to be a "good Catholic" while being militantly pro-abortion.

In a joint press conference with the Canadian Abortion Rights Action League, Morgentaler stressed that "in the forthcoming Federal election there is one overriding concern - to defeat the Alliance Party of Stockwell Day." Alliance leader Day's strongest endorsement for all those concerned about life issues comes from the condemnation given him by the abortionist. Morgentaler said of Mr. Day: "As one who devoted the last 32 years of my life to the fight for the rights of women to safe legal abortions, I am appalled at the emergence of a party and a leader whose hidden agenda is to roll back those rights."

Morgentaler also added to the latest frenzy of attacks against Day's Christian religion calling him a "right-wing fundamentalist."

ABORTION INDUSTRY LEADERS, POLITICIANS AFRAID TO HAVE DEBATE ON LIFE

CLC Press Release - November 21, 2000
For Immediate Release

Henry Morgentaler and Canadian politicians are afraid to debate the abortion issue, according to Campaign Life Coalition.

"It's time for a real debate on the right to life in this country," says Jim Hughes, national president of Campaign Life Coalition.

"Morgentaler is siding with Jean Chretien, Alexa McDonough and Joe Clark in condemning the Canadian Alliance for simply supporting a process which might lead to a national debate on abortion. Why are they so afraid to debate this issue?" asked Hughes.

Morgentaler inaccurately refers to a "right" to abortion. "There exists no 'right' to abortion from any judicial and legislative process," says Hughes. According to the Supreme Court decision of 1988, which struck down Canada's old abortion law, it is up to our elected representatives in parliament to define the legal rights of the unborn.

"Everyone knows that all human beings have the right to life," says Hughes. "It's time for our politicians in parliament to live up to their responsibility and restore the legal rights of the most vulnerable human beings, the unborn children."

Since the 1988 court decision Campaign Life Coalition has been encouraging parliamentarians to take up the challenge presented by the Supreme Court of Canada to define the legal rights of the unborn. "Some day - hopefully soon - parliament will debate this issue," says Hughes. "That is why Campaign Life Coalition encourages all pro-life voters to vote for the pro-life candidate in their riding, regardless of party affiliation. We need more pro-life MPs who will vote to protect the unborn child."

CANADA CITED ON LIST OF COUNTRIES THAT PERSECUTE CHRISTIANS

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

OTTAWA, Nov 21 (LSN.ca) - The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC), a national association of 32 Protestant denominations, churches, church-related organizations and educational institutions, has responded today to the recent bashing of Canadian Alliance Leader Stockwell Day's Christianity by public officials and media outlets. Also responding to these anti-Christian attacks is Voice of the Martyrs Canada, one of the foremost organizations in detailing Christian persecution around the world in countries like Sudan and Indonesia.

LifeSite reported on the recent frenzy of Christianity bashing last week with attacks on Day's belief in the Biblical account of creation and his statement that "Jesus is Lord of the whole universe."

Voice of the Martyrs noted that they have "been greatly distressed over the anti-Christian statements being expressed by electoral candidates during Canada's federal election campaign, particularly concerning the beliefs held by Stockwell Day, an evangelical Christian and leader of the Canadian Alliance Party (the official opposition party in the Canadian parliament)." The organization asked for "the prayers of believers around the world on behalf of our country, and all candidates in the upcoming election."

In its press release, EFC said, "individuals ought to be able to come to public life with their faith and their beliefs intact. They should not have their integrity and ability questioned on the basis of their fundamental beliefs. All individuals of any faith are threatened when one faith is mocked." The release notes "the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada takes no partisan position. However, EFC cannot ignore the blatant bias of some journalists and even some politicians in denigrating the leader of the Canadian Alliance because of his faith commitments."

"When a prominent Liberal candidate, such as Hedy Fry, challenges the statement of fundamental belief, 'Jesus is Lord,' as a statement of religious intolerance, it relegates evangelical faith and indeed, the faiths of a majority of Canadians, to the margins of society," continues EFC. The organization's president Gary Walsh said, "This statement is central to our faith, to restrict it from the public square flies in the face of all our guarantees of freedom of religion and expression found in the Charter and human rights legislation." He added, "Every faith tradition has fundamental statements of belief that espouse the truth of their faith," says Walsh. "If every one of these beliefs about deity and the world are deemed inappropriate positions all people of faith will be excluded from public life. Atheists only may apply."

CANADA ELECTION ROUNDUP

While Liberals, PC's and NDPers can deliberately bash Christianity to their hearts' content without political fallout, Canadian Alliance candidates who inadvertently offend political correctness are called to resign as candidates. Most recently Alliance's Brian Fitzpatrick, candidate for the Saskatchewan riding of Prince Albert, is being asked to step down after joking about his bald head saying he was scalped - an supposed offense to Native Americans.

NDP Leader Alexa McDonough was quoted on abortion and homosexuality yesterday as she chatted on-line with youth in a MuchMusic sponsored event. She said, "I am not prepared to have Stockwell Day or any other neanderthal politician take away my right to control my own body." On homosexuality she said, "The NDP is the only party (that) voted in Parliament to support gay and lesbian marriage."

Alliance Leader Stockwell Day and NDP Leader Alexa McDonough sparred over abortion on a BC-TV debate. Day defended the party's position on the use of referenda to decide the issue and McDonough retorted "I find it absolutely outrageous that Stockwell Day thinks that he can subject my right to choose, my right to make reproductive choices, my right to control the decisions affecting my own body to a referendum and start talking about percentages." Day responded, "If citizens want to discuss an item, that's up to them. I will not be leading any referendums on any issue."
