Packard, Buffet and Soros Donate to RU-486

WASHINGTON, Sept 5 (LSN.ca) - With the US Federal Drug Administration decision on the abortion drug RU-486 set for September 30, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has uncovered the manufacturers and funders of the effort to bring chemical abortion into the US. After US President Clinton urged the German company Roussel Uclaf (a unit of Hoechst AG) to hand over the U.S. patent rights for the abortion drug to the Population Council, the Council in turn created Danco Laboratories LLC to take care of the marketing, distribution and manufacturing of the drug for the US market. Internal Danco documents, obtained by WSJ indicate that the company has contracted out production of RU-486 to a plant in Communist China, home of the notorious one-child policy and its accompanying forced abortion. The documents also reveal that millions of dollars in donations were given to Danco's efforts by the foundations of Warren Buffett, George Soros and the late David Packard.

The documents covered in today's WSJ are entitled "Highlights of Partnership Meeting Held on June 15, 2000, at Danco Laboratories New York Office," and "First Quarter 2000 Activity Highlights," dated June 27. They offer a glimpse into the top-secret workings of the for-profit company Danco and it's chief executive officer, Roy Karnovsky, a former Merck & Co. marketing executive who worked at the drug giant for 20 years. The documents reveal Danco intends to sell the drug directly to physicians and clinics and plans to teach doctors, counselors, mid-level clinicians and other medical personnel to administer it properly. The teaching process has already begun through a project of the National Abortion Federation funded by Danco.

Marketing strategy includes distribution of brochures, CD-ROMS and other types of training guides, as well as a Web site and a toll-free number for prospective customers. WSJ reports that Danco's public-relations strategy is being designed, at least in part, by the Seattle office of DDB Worldwide. The company has tentatively picked the brand name Early Option for the drug.

Danco plans to manufacture the drug in the US but is contracting out the manufacture to the Chinese company till manufacture in the US is approved. The documents indicate that Danco has a manufacturing plant that FDA officials were scheduled to inspect in late July.
