JAPANESE CABINET PANEL APPROVES RESEARCH ON HUMAN EMBRYOS

TOKYO, Aug 1, 2001 (LSN.ca) - A Japanese Cabinet panel on science and technology approved guidelines for destructive research using human embryos today. While the law bans human cloning, the approved guidelines would allow scientists to use human embryos created in fertility treatments for experimentation. Final approval for the guidelines is expected later this month with government spokesmen saying that the controversial research could begin by the end of the year.
