SINGAPORE, Aug 20, 2001 (LSN.ca) - Last Wednesday, the Catholic Medical Guild of Singapore, made up of some 300 doctors, launched a 10 day prayer vigil against embryonic stem cell research. Reuters reports that Singapore has invested heavily into the controversial research which destroys human embryos. The country has a stake in Australia-based ES Cell International, which is a major producer and supplier of embryonic stem cells for research.

Guild president Dr. John Hui said, "We are praying that embryonic stem cell research will be discontinued, not just in Singapore but throughout the world. We were human at the point of inception... and we believe that absolute respect should be accorded to the human embryo from the very beginning of life."
