AUSTRALIA APPROVES FUNDING FOR IMPORTED EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS

CANBERRA, Aug 23, 2001 (LSN.ca) - On Monday the Australian government approved funding for a national center for stem cell research. Existing law bans the harvesting of stem cells from human embryos but stem cells from human embryos will be acquired from overseas to skirt the law. Moreover, Prime Minister John Howard has indicated that embryos created initially for fertility treatments may be allowed to be harvested for stem-cells.
