BC PREMIER MAKING ABORTION AN ELECTION ISSUE
Boasts of His Extreme Pro-Abortion Stand
VANCOUVER, Feb 28, 2001 (LSN.ca) - In a half-hour paid TV broadcast yesterday, British Columbia NDP Premier Ujjal Dosanjh laid out his platform for the soon to be announced provincial election. During his speech, Dosanjh boasted about his militantly pro-abortion record. "Another fundamental issue to me is protecting a woman's right to make her own decisions about her body and about abortion. Our government helped make a woman's right to choose a reality. We must never go back to the days a decade ago when politicians imposed their personal, anti-abortion values on women," he said.
Dosanjh accused his Liberal opponent of harboring candidates within his party that were pro-life. "I am concerned that there are well organized efforts underway by some of Mr. Campbell's supporters in the anti-choice movement to turn back the clock. I am concerned that a large number of Gordon Campbell's MLA's and candidates want to take away a woman's right to choose," he said. He concluded with a pledge of allegiance to abortion: "I want to tell you that I will fight to ensure that a woman's reproductive rights are safeguarded and never taken away. I'm proud of my work to ensure that women throughout BC will always have access to birth control - including the morning after pill - and access to safe abortions. BC's commitment to a woman's right to choose will be tested as we take steps in the coming months to further strengthen that right."
Campaign Life Coalition BC has responded to Premier Dosanjh's call to make abortion an election issue. CLC BC President John Hof told LifeSite. "We will be offering to the electorate of British Columbia the definition of 'CHOICE'". "Only one question for the Premier today. Protecting a woman's right to Choose what?," said Hof.
