UNITED NATIONS, July 12, 2001 (LSN.ca) - Speaking yesterday on the occasion of World Population Day, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan made a thinly veiled call for abortion rights while promoting "an integrated approach to... slowing population growth."

Annan appealed to the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development to justify his endorsement of population control, which he tied to reducing poverty and protecting the environment. Annan said that "Among the requirements for achieving these related goals are universal access to ...reproductive health care and family planning... Women... are often denied the right to...control their own fertility. Enhancing women's opportunities enables them to make informed choices about family size -- and to break the vicious cycle of poverty and environmental degradation."
