Population control cited as real reason for DDT restrictions

June 13, 2001(LSN.ca) - A U.N. treaty which would severely restrict the use of DDT, the primary chemical used to fight malaria, will result in the death of millions, says a report in The New American, a conservative U.S. bi-weekly magazine. William F. Jasper, author of the article, says the United Nations Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (known as the POP Convention), signed by representatives of more than 100 nations in Stockholm on May 23rd, will in effect "give this murderous plague [malaria] permanent protected status."

Malaria "is, by far, the most devastating and deadly parasitic disease in the world," notes the Malaria Foundation International (MFI), one of the world's leading anti-malaria organizations. After the Second World War a widespread campaign against malaria using DDT drastically reduced the number of cases worldwide, but the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences reported in 1996 that malaria was undergoing a resurgence. "It is a public health problem today in more than 90 countries inhabited by some 2,400 million people - 40 percent of the world's population. Malaria is estimated to cause up to 500 million clinical cases and 2.7 million deaths each year," stated the NAS medical institute.

The New Americanās Jasper contends that the environmental opposition to DDT is based on "junk science," and that the real roots of the ban on the malaria-fighting substance lie in population control. The POP Conventionās restrictions on DDT will render it too costly and inaccessible to those countries in most serious need. Jasper noted with concern President Bushās support of the convention.
