UNITED NATIONS TO FIGHT DISCRIMINATION BASED ON 'SEXUAL ORIENTATION'

UN Conference Against Racism - Title Misleading

NEW YORK, Mar 6, 2001 (LSN.ca) - The United Nations is set to unleash another bombshell as it begins its preparatory committee for the upcoming World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance. While a conference against racism seems commendable, as usual the United Nations has mixed in error with good intentions. Most people would agree that the fight against racism is worthwhile, but the United Nations has attached to the anti-racist agenda the matter of discrimination based on "sexual orientation." The Draft Declaration to be finalized at the World Conference, which will be held in Durban, South Africa, from 31 August to 7 September 2001, contains in paragraph 18 a definition of "other forms of discrimination" which includes "on the basis of gender ... sexual orientation".

Homosexual activist groups hailed the draft declaration noting: "If adopted, this will be the first time that sexual orientation discrimination has been condemned in a United Nations Conference Declaration." EGALE, Canada's foremost homosexual activist group boasted that officials in the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, "confirmed that Canada would continue to push for recognition of sexual orientation equality issues at the World Conference."

Considering the fighting of "discrimination based on sexual orientation" in Canada has led to Christian Mayors being successfully prosecuted by human rights tribunals for failing to proclaim "Gay Pride" celebrations, Christian schools losing court cases over firing practicing-homosexual teachers, and a Christian printer being fined for refusing to print homosexual propaganda, the inclusion of the language is dangerous. It is especially disturbing since the stated objectives of the conference include:

"To formulate concrete recommendations to further action-oriented national, regional and international measures aimed at combating all forms of racism and racial discrimination" and "To draw up concrete recommendations to ensure that the United Nations has the necessary resources for its activities to combat racism and racial discrimination."
