SHAW CABLE SEEKING EXEMPTION FROM MANDATORY HOMOSEXUAL CHANNEL
OTTAWA, May 29, 2001 (LSN.ca) - Shaw Communications Inc., the Calgary based cable company which serves most cable markets west of Winnipeg, is asking the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to allow it to exempt customers from having to subscribe to a homosexual channel. The Financial Post section of the National Post reports today that Jim Shaw, the company's chief executive, explained that his company would face a "consumer revolt" if it forced customers to accept PrideVision, a homosexual channel, as part of their cable package. PrideVision is one of 16 English-language digital channels set to launch this fall that the CRTC insists must be carried by all cable companies.
While the Rogers Cable company seemed to have little problem with PrideVision, Quebec cable companies Cogeco and VidŽotron ltŽe simply advise that the channels should each be available to the public and thus consumers would be allowed to select according to their interests.
Roy Beyer of the Canada Family Action Coalition told LifeSite that "people should not be forced to have to bring channels into their homes they find objectionable." He said, "it should be a matter of choice not a matter of force." Beyer, urged concerned cable customers to include with their bill payment a note expressing their views on the matter.

PROTESTING PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND OVER CHRISTIAN BASHING
STRATFORD, PEI, May 29, 2001 (LSN.ca) - REAL Women Canada has endorsed a letter writing campaign to the government of Prince Edward Island over the case of Dagmar and Arnost Cepica. The Christian couple who ran a bed-and-breakfast out of their family home were forced to close down their operation and pay a fee to two male homosexuals for refusing to comply with a PEI Human Rights Commission (HRC) order mandating that they allow practicing homosexuals to rent rooms in their home.
Christian freelance journalist Charles Moore has already written the PEI Minister of Tourism to protest the treatment of the Christian couple. Moore suggests that, if the Cepica's can afford it, the denial of their religious freedom could be successfully challenged at the Supreme Court, especially in light of the recent decision regarding Trinity Western University. Moore informs both the Minister and the province's Tourism Industry Association of his decision to boycott visiting PEI and encourage others to do the same "until your province is prepared to uphold religious freedom and the sovereign right of individuals to set moral standards of behavior in their own homes, even if they're in the B&B business."

RISK OF PREMATURE BIRTH RESULTING FROM ABORTIONS NOTED IN 27 STUDIES
OTTAWA, May 29, 2001 (LSN.ca) - While medical journals have been hesitant to publish studies showing abortion's link to breast cancer, researcher Brent Rooney has discovered no such difficulty in studies showing a link between abortion and preterm birth. Rooney has compiled a list of twenty-seven studies published in major medical journals showing a significantly elevated risk of premature birth from prior induced abortions.
Medical research indicates that preterm birth increases the risk of respiratory distress and asthma, Cerebral Palsy and death. Moreover, a preterm birth is often a LBW (Low Birth Weight) one (a birth weight under 2500 gms which is 5 pounds 8 ounces), with LBW infants having over twenty two times the risk of infant death compared with an infant with a birth weight exceeding 2500 gms. (Pediatrics, Dr. B Guyer, Dec. 1999;104:1229-1246).
In late February, Rooney wrote Health Minister Allan Rock explaining that since preterm births are a serious health problem women should be made aware of these risks prior to consenting to abortions. Rooney notes that consent forms for abortions in Canada lack any such information warning of the preterm birth risk for subsequent children.
The risk factors are by no means minor. A Danish study with over 61,000 women as subjects, published in Dec. 1999 in the respected medical journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, found a 99 percent increased relative risk of a very preterm birth (gestation less than 34 weeks) for women with at least one previous induced abortion compared to women with no induced abortions. The studies showing the link have been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, British Medical Journal, The New England Journal Of Medicine, American Journal of Public Health and others.

ABORTION CONTINUING TO MAKE CHINA'S SEX RATIO GO FROM BAD TO WORSE
BEIJING, May 29, 2001 (LSN.ca) - Once again published reports are showing that sex-selective abortions are creating havoc in China. A report in today's Washington Post reveals that recent census figures show that 117 boys are born in China for every 100 girls, but in some small villages where the one child policy is rigorously enforced, that ratio reaches 140-100. The report indicates that despite laws forbidding sex-selective abortions the situation is growing worse. One woman interviewed by the Post reported that ultrasound machines used in sex-selective abortions are in "every county" and "even (in) townships."
The report details disastrous consequences such as "bachelor villages," growing crime rates, infant mortality rates for girls soaring above those of boys, and a booming trade in kidnapped women.
Interestingly the report reveals that Chinese researchers predicted an excess of males as early as the 1970's while China was preparing its 'family planning' policy. The Post reports, "An open letter issued by the government and inaugurating what was then known as the "one child" policy argued that sex ratios would not change as a result of family planning."

LIFESITE NEWSBYTES
American Life League has condemned a poll by the by the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research on embryonic stem cell research as: "the most transparently misleading and potentially destructive survey." Judie Brown, president of American Life League said "the repeated use of the term 'fertilized egg' in the survey instead of the scientifically correct term 'human embryo' was intentionally done to confuse and mislead those being polled. This generates a false front of support for experimentation that treats persons as disposable property."
The famed musician Prince, known for his vulgarity and pornographic presentation, has reportedly become a Jehovah's Witness and is now condemning curse words and promoting a relationship with God. CNN reports Prince as saying, "when you use those (curse) words, you call up all the anger, all the negative times the word has been used before -- you bring it toward yourself. Why would you want that? . When I look at the violence, I wonder where the parents are, but also where is God in their lives? A kid is an open computer ready for programming. Some weird relationships happen, smoking too early and sex."
