UNITED NATIONS, October 15, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to the United Nations and its Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Friday. Following the award, the organization and its leader were heaped with accolades by world leaders, but given sharp criticism by pro-life leaders.

Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition Canada reacted to the announcement of the awards saying, “I’m appalled.” Hughes recalled the atrocious record of the United Nations in promoting abortion through its various agencies UNFPA, UNICEF, UNIFEM, UNDP, and the personal efforts of Kofi Annan to promote population control. UNFPA, in conjunction with the International Planned Parenthood Federation, has been the foremost promoter of abortion, abortifacient contraception and sterilization, worldwide, particularly targeting third world nations. While the United Nations record on promoting abortion and population control is well documented, Annan’s personal dealings with the subject are hard to find.

As recently as July, Annan made a thinly veiled call for abortion rights while promoting “an integrated approach to… slowing population growth” which included a call for “universal access to …reproductive health care and family planning… (allowing women to) …control their own fertility.” As head of the UN, Annan has appointed a cadre of radical feminists to head up various departments at the world organization including Angela King and Mary Robinson.

In December 2000, at a farewell event for Nafis Sadik, the former head of the UN’s population control arm, UNFPA, Annan praised Sadik for her promotion of population control around the world. “You have done more than anyone to bring about a radical change in the way the world sees population issues. … You have ensured that they are no longer seen in isolation, but as integral to all development efforts,” he said. In a revealing quote Annan lauded Sadik’s “willingness to brave the wrath, if not of the Almighty Himself, then certainly of those who claim to speak for Him here on earth. … And what is more, you have won your point.” At the time, Hughes, pointed out that Annan’s quote indicated that in some way the UN realizes it is fighting God in its population control agenda. “The UN knows that it’s doing the Devil’s work and is proud of it,” Hughes told LifeSite.
