SHOW THE TRUTH DEMONSTRATORS ARRESTED IN STURGEON FALLS
STURGEON FALLS, ON, September 28, 2001 (LSN.ca) - Pro-lifers demonstrating at a high school in Sturgeon Falls were arrested and taken into custody this morning. Rosemary Connell, head of Show the Truth Canada, told LifeSite that her group went through "half an hour of sheer intimidation" by police at the scene of the demonstration. Following this, four of the group were arrested and wrongly charged with breach of a peace bond.
The Show the Truth demonstrators were stationed at a high school across the street from an elementary school. In order to direct the signs depicting the horrors of abortion to only the high school students, the pro-lifers stationed themselves in a line with their backs to the elementary school. When police arrived they demanded the group move to the other side of the street since they said the elementary school children would pass by the signs in school buses and could see them. The pro-lifers obliged but were still harassed.
One officer was irate that, while crossing the street, one of the protesters had turned her sign around and the children would have been able to view it. When the sign in question was looked at it, it depicted an already born healthy, happy baby.
Eventually three officers and the chief of police Richard Lahaie arrived on the scene to arrest four of the participants, claiming they were breaking a court agreed peace bond. However the demonstrators repeatedly insisted that the bond had expired. The officers arrested the demonstrators nonetheless, but later at the police station chief Lahaie admitted it was a mistake and released the pro-lifers.
The peace bond resulted from a police arrest of Show the Truth demonstrators in 1999 at the same location. When the case was heard the judge was unreceptive to arguments that the pro-lifers were targeting the elementary school. A deal was struck whereby the demonstrators would agree, for six months, not to picket in a way that might be construed as targeting an elementary school and dropped the case.
