US REP AT UNITED NATIONS MEETING SPEAKS AGAINST PROMOTION OF ABORTION
Statement also supported abstinence and families
UNITED NATIONS, April 3, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Speaking on the first day of meetings at the United Nations session of the Commission on Population and Development, a United States delegate spoke against promotion of abortion. On April 1 Sichan Siv said the United States did not accept the use of the term "reproductive health services", because it could be interpreted to include promoting the legalization or expansion of legal abortion services.
According to a UN report on the meeting Siv said: "it was important to focus on sound, evidence-based strategies to improve the lives of women, he said, rather than using dated or non-existent data as the basis for analysis. That was most apparent in the section on abortion. The lack of current, accurate and comprehensive data in that section led to questions regarding the validity, purpose and intent of the analysis. In fact, key actions in the ICPD Programme of Action called upon governments to take appropriate action to help women avoid abortions, but progress in that area was absent from the report."
The US statement also supported abstinence and families. "Abstinence and postponement of initial sexual activity played important roles in the promotion of adolescent health, including the prevention of HIV/AIDS," said Siv. Turning to the issue of families, he stressed the value of strong and stable families in preventing risky behaviour among young people.

PRO-ABORTION EUROPEAN DELEGATIONS DEFEND UNFPA AT UN MEETING
UNITED NATIONS, April 3, 2002 (LSN.ca) - A cohort of strongly pro-abortion European delegates used their statements at the United Nations April 2 session of the Commission on Population and Development to speak in support of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). ln response to evidence showing UNFPA's support for China's coercive abortion regime the United States has suspended support to the UN organization.
Samantha Singson, a UN pro-life lobbyist affiliated with Campaign Life Coalition and reporting on the scene for LifeSite said that a Belgium representative began the litany of virtually identical statements from each of the nations supporting UNFPA. Jean De Ruyt, speaking for the Belgian delegation, said his country "deplores the continued and unwarranted allegations against the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) concerning its assumed involvement in forced abortion and genocide." He underlined his country's full support for and confidence in UNFPA.
The sentiments were echoed by Ellie Leemhuis for the Netherlands, Bjorn Andersson for Sweden, Gerry Ash for the United Kingdom, Mr. Brunborg for Norway and Charlotte Hohn for Germany. Singson told LifeSite that the statements of support seemed a "deliberate coordinated effort."

UK PARLIAMENTARIANS URGE BUSH TO BLOCK UNFPA FUNDING
LONDON, April 3, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Members of both houses of the UK parliament and from all the major parties have written to US President Bush urging him to block further American funding for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children in the UK reports that separate letters, one signed by members of the House of Commons and the other by members of the House of Lords, pointed out that the UNFPA has funded, supported, praised and defended China's coercive population control policy, which entails forced abortions and infanticide. The letters noted that US funding for the UNFPA had been declared illegal under former administrations on account of the organisation's complicity in China's population control policy.
ABORTED BABY PARTS MARKET FLOURISHES AS UK CO. OFFERS LIVE BRAIN CELLS
LONDON, April 3, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The UK-based biotechnology company CellFactors has launched sales of cells derived from the brains and spinal cords of aborted babies. The company is claiming that its "immortalised neural cell lines" can replicate indefinitely.
The company's release notes that their "neural cell lines, probably the most accurate in vitro representation of human brain and spinal tissue ever available for research, are already attracting interest from biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies around the world."

FOCUS ON THE FAMILY CANADA URGES ACTION ON CHILD PORN RULING
VANCOUVER, April 3, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Focus on the Family Canada has condemned the ruling on child pornography issued last Tuesday by British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Duncan Shaw. Shaw determined that John Robin Sharpe's fictional stories of men engaged in violent sexual acts involving boys had "some artistic merit," and so could not be classified as child pornography.
Focus on the Family Canada President Dr. Darrel Reid blasted the decision. "This ruling ought to alert the government to the clear and present danger facing our children," Reid said. "Parliament needs to send a strong and forceful message that child pornography of any kind will not be tolerated in this country. If no action is taken, we will see every pedophile and sexual pervert attempting to use 'artistic merit' as a defense for the pornographic writings they possess or produce."
B.C. Attorney General Geoff Plant, said no decision has been made on whether the ruling will be appealed. "We'll have a look at the reasons, study them and determine what course of action, if any, is appropriate," he told Canadian Press.

Focus encourages Canadians to contact their MPs by writing a letter, e-mail or fax, or talking directly to the MPs. "Ask them to support tough new amendments to the current child pornography law that will ensure that written materials that promote and glorify pedophilia and sadomasochistic sexual activities involving children are made illegal in Canada."

CLARIFICATION RE: BC BISHOP'S REMOVAL OF SEX-ED PROGRAMS
Regarding the March 25 LifeSite story "VANCOUVER ARCHBISHOP GRANTS VICTORY TO PARENTS IN SEX-ED BATTLE," Archbishop Adam Exner would like to clarify that he did not suggest that the former proposed program was not in conformity with the Holy See. In a letter to LifeSite, the archbishop pointed out that "In the previous proposed program, which involved the mandatory use of either "Fully Alive" or "Growing in Love," the biological aspects of sexuality education were to be done by the parents, in keeping with the principle that parents are the first educators of their children." The archbishop also wrote, "I appreciate your support for the recent changes we have made to our policy on sexuality education."
