CONTRACEPTIVE PILL CONFIRMED AS POLLUTANT - UK ENVIRONMENT AGENCY
"The evidence is unequivocal - the pill is a pollutant just like DDT or PCBs."
LONDON, April 11, 2002 (LSN.ca) - A statement issued by the Environment Agency on March 26 confirmed that the 'pill' is a major pollutant. The Agency stated that "oestrogenic steroids - natural and synthetic hormones in sewage effluent - have been shown to be more potent than previously thought, with the synthetic steroid 17a ethinyloestradiol (the contraceptive pill), showing effects in fish at concentrations below 1 nanogram per litre (a thousand millionth of a gram)."
UK Life League, a local pro-life group which broadcast the agency's finding said, "These synthetic steroids are so powerful that following sewage treatment they are capable of feminizing our fish stocks - one has to ask what is the impact on those men whose partners are contracepting." A spokesman for the League noted the group's opposition to the harmful chemicals. "The UK Life League has consistently stated that pumping oestrogen chemicals into your body is the most environmentally unfriendly thing you can do - this latest research proves the danger," he said.
"The evidence is unequivocal - the pill is a pollutant just like DDT or PCBs. It appears that the EA is powerless to do anything about it except to continue monitoring the risk," concluded the League's spokesman.
