ST PATRICK'S MSGR SAYS ALLOWING GAYS IN SEMINARIES WAS "GRAVE MISTAKE"
Says in Immoral US "Liberated sex is offered to people all day long, all evening long"
NEW YORK, April 22, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The North American Catholic sex scandals continue to be major news in most media. While NY Cardinal Egan and the other US Cardinals are in Rome meeting on the issue, yesterday's sermon by Egan's stand-in at St. Patricks, Msgr Eugene Clark, condemned U.S. immorality and the admission of homosexuals into Catholic seminaries.
Today's New York Daily News reports that Clark "pointedly blamed the priest sex abuse scandal yesterday on homosexuality, a 'sex-saturated' society and a constant assault on celibacy by liberals". Clark was quoted as saying "Homosexuality became in the American exchange of views a protected area... and unfortunately ... homosexual students were allowed to pass through seminaries. Grave mistake. Not because homosexuals in any way tend to criminality, but because it is a disorder."
An April 20 Catholic Zenit News article entitled, The Church Under Fire - How Much is Fair, also addresses the scandals and states that the situation is being exploited by social liberals "to promote their pet agendas, which may or may not have any relationship to the abuse problem". Among the examples quoted is an article by the Boston Globe's James Carroll calling for changes "overturning all Church teaching on sexual morality, divorce and contraception; allowing priestly ordination of women; and permitting marriage for priests".
The Zenit article also exposes serious factual errors in news reports on the scandals. For example, media are falsely giving the impression that this is primarily a Catholic problem. Zenit notes the results of a recent national Christian Ministry Resources study. The study found that "Despite headlines focusing on the priest pedophile problem in the Roman Catholic Church, most American churches being hit with child sexual-abuse allegations are Protestant, and most of the alleged abusers are not clergy or staff, but church volunteers."
