WASHINGTON, August 12, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Senator Hillary Clinton (D., New York) has become one of her party's largest donors to fellow Democrats, thus building support for a future run at the presidency. So far, Mrs. Clinton is still saying she will serve her full six-year term, but has never explicitly ruled out a 2004 presidential bid.

But political strategists say spreading money around to a large number of fellow Democrats could serve her better for any future national ambitions. "To the degree that she wants to keep national options open down the road, this is a better way to do it," said David Dougherty, a Democrat and vice president of Global Strategy Group in Washington.

Driving Mrs. Clinton's leadership ambitions is her political action committee, HILLPAC, which has donated $469,000 to Democratic candidates for the Nov. 2002 elections, according to Federal Election Commission records. Patricia Solis Doyle, executive director of HILLPAC, said the aggressive giving to others should dampen accusations that Mrs. Clinton intends to hoard donations for a presidential bid. "Our mission is to get Democrats elected," Doyle said.

Mrs. Clinton's personal donor base includes aging model Christie Brinkley ($5,000); Robert Johnson, chairman of Black Entertainment Television ($5,000); and Dreamworks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg ($2,500). Among those who have contributed $10,000 are Walter Kaye, the longtime friend who referred Monica Lewinsky for a White House internship. Clinton officials John Podesta and Henry Cisneros are also donors.
