UNITED NATIONS' CEDAW PUSHES PERU TO ALLOW MORE ABORTION

Meanwhile in Washington UN Reps Argue CEDAW Does Not Support Abortion

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

NEW YORK, August 16, 2002 (LSN.ca) - While United Nations representatives are arguing in Washington that the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) should be ratified since it does not promote abortion, the CEDAW Committee at UN headquarters is promoting abortion in Peru. The committee of UN 'experts' met yesterday to consider Peru's compliance with the feminist convention. Silvia Loli Espinoza, Adviser on Gender Issues and Human Rights in Peru's Ministry of Women and Social Development represented her country before the committee.

Aida Gonzalez Martinez, a UN 'expert' from Mexico, said it was "important to promote sexual and reproductive health as well as the dissemination of information on family planning methods and condom use throughout society, not just among sex workers." She also expressed concern about the perception of abortions, noting that it was considered taboo in Peru. Much remained to be done in changing cultural attitudes, she said.

Ms. Livingston Raday, an 'expert' from Israel pushed Peru to accept abortifacient morning after pills. "Priority should be given to emergency contraception," she said. Moreover, Charlotte Abaka, an 'expert' from Ghana and the Committee Chairperson was offended that unborn children of adolescents were recognized and thus were granted the right to life. According to a UN report she noted that "under the law, 14-year-olds and even girls younger than 14 could have their children recognized, she said those provisions contributed to the maternal mortality rate, already high in Peru, as adolescent pregnancies had high rates of medical complications."

INDIA'S COERCIVE 2-CHILD POLICY RESULTING IN FEMALE ABORTIONS

Couples with more than two children barred from local elections and gov't jobs

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

BOMBAY, August 16, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The silent enforcement of India's coercive two child policy has been identified as the source of the country's troubles with abortion of baby girls and the resulting deficit of women. Inter Press Service reports that the population control policy includes welfare payments to poor Indians with two children or fewer and rewards couples that marry after age 21 and accept sterilization after having two children.

The report also indicates that six Indian states are prohibiting couples with more than two children from participating in local elections, and some states bar those with more than two children from government jobs. India's National Population Policy (NPP), released in 2000, aims to have the country -- now with a population of more than one billion - 'achieve a stable population' by 2045.

NEW FLU VACCINE TO USE CANCER-POTENTIAL ABORTED FETAL CELL LINE

“Why would anyone … want to use them … when there are ethical alternatives”

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

CLEARWATER, FL, August 16, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Children of God for Life, a pro-life group specializing in vaccine information, has discovered plans to use the Crucell, NV aborted fetal cell line PER C6 in a new flu vaccine. The vaccine will be developed by Med-Immune Inc., a pharmaceutical company based in Gaithersburg, MD, for protecting against influenza. Competing flu vaccines such as Fluvirin and Flushield utilize chick embryo - not aborted fetal tissue.

The fetal cell line was created using the retinal tissue from an 18 week gestation aborted baby. According to Dr. Van der Eb from Crucell, , "PER C6 was made just for the pharmaceutical manufacturing of adenovirus vectors." He adds, "I realize that this sounds a bit commercial, but PER C6 were made for that particular purpose."

For years, the pharmaceutical companies have stated that the existing fetal cell lines used in many of today's vaccines would be sufficient since the cell lines were supposed to be immortal. However, that is not the case and the newest PER C6 cell line does possess the potential of immortality, but only because it introduces the possibility of carcinogenics into the cell line. According to the FDA report:

"Since cell lines such as 293 and PER.C6 express the Ad5, vectors of this type are thought to have significant potential for vaccine development because of their demonstrated ability to generate cell-mediated immune responses to HIV. However, a feature of regulatory importance associated with Ad5-transformed cells is their capacity to form tumors in immuno-deficient animals such as nude mice. Factors that could influence the risk associated with the use of Designer Cell Substrates include (1) the known mechanism of cell transformation leading to the development of tumorigenic cells; (2) residual cell substrate DNA; and (3) the presence of adventitious agents, especially oncogenic viruses."

"Not only are the new vaccines under development an affront to those who oppose abortion and fetal tissue research, they are also potentially deadly," said Children of God for Life Director, Debi Vinnedge. "Why would anyone who learns the truth about these vaccines want to use them especially when there are ethical alternatives on the market right now?"

Letters are once again being sent to the Department of Health & Human Services, the CDC and FDA to protest this latest development. Addresses are as follows:

CANADIAN JUDGE FINES MAN $10,000 FOR POSESSION OF CHILD PORN

Fine Was One Of The Highest Ever Demanded For The Offence

WINNIPEG, August 16, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Manitoba Judge Cathy Everett has fined a man convicted of possession of child pornography $10,000 and sentenced him to three years supervised probation. Thomas Woroby, 55, was found to have downloaded the child porn from Internet sites and stored the photos on his computer.

In pronouncing her sentence Everett described the plight of the victims of child porn. After being horrified by the photos shown in court as evidence she said: "You just don't know how those children could ever, ever recover from what's been done to them and go on to live a healthy existence."

Police and advocates for children praised the decision noting that the fine was one of the highest ever demanded for the offence.

GIRL SCOUTS/GUIDES HONOURS PRO-ABORTION UN LEADER

Pro-Abortion Confab held in Pro-Life Philippines

MANILA, August 16, 2002 (LSN.ca/C-Fam) - At its world conference held this summer in the Philippines, a noted pro-life country, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGS) celebrated the achievements of the former head of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The WAGGS invited former UNFPA Executive Director Nafis Sadik to deliver the keynote address, and also presented her with its "World Citizenship Award."

This is not the WAGGS' first brush with controversy, as the group appears to embrace the radical feminism and reproductive rights agenda of the United Nations more openly. In October 2001, the Friday Fax reported that WAGGS UN representative Leslie Wright publicized a job opportunity at "Catholics" for a Free Choice (CFFC), a pro-abortion lobbying group that has campaigned to have the Vatican kicked out of the UN.
