CANADIAN UFO CULT'S CLONING CLAIM SPARKS WARNING OVER STEM CELL BILL
MONTREAL, December 20, 2002 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Raelians, a Quebec-based UFO cult, claims that its Clonaid company is set to announce the birth of the world first cloned human within two weeks. While the claims of this sect have been dubious in the extreme, pro-life leaders point out that what this "news story does point out is that the cloning of human beings is a scientific disaster waiting to happen." Pro-life leaders warn that despite what it says on the surface, the proposed Canadian legislation regarding stem cell research, Bill C-13, does not forbid human cloning.
"Every 'mad' scientist in the world will want to be the first to create a clone," says a release by Campaign Life Coalition Canada. "The sacredness of human life will be lost in this rush to get their name in print. Every attempt to clone has been a disaster, even when animals such as 'Dolly' were the object of the experimentation."
"Bill C-13 has cleared the Health Committee and has been sent back to Parliament for a vote early in the new year. Despite assurances through the media that this bill bans cloning, the facts show that the opposite is true", said Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition. "Expert, Dr. Dianne Irving, Biochemist and Professor of Philosophy and Ethics at Catholic University of America, has pointed out in a written submission to the Canadian Health Committee, that C-13 is completely flawed. The one technique of cloning mentioned in the Bill, is incorrectly defined. There are at least eight other kinds of cloning which the bill does not address. Therefore, the bill effectively prohibits no technique of human cloning", continued Mr. Hughes.
Campaign Life Coalition asks the people of Canada to contact their MPs and call for them to vote against Bill C-13 when it comes before the House. CLC also calls on the federal government to withdraw this Bill which is a Pandora's box of horrors for human life.
