CANADIANS JOIN U.S. GROUPS PRAISING BUSH'S RECLASSIFYING FOETUS AS AN UNBORN CHILD

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

TORONTO, February, 1, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Campaign Life Coalition Canada joined many American pro-life groups in praising the Bush administration for declaring that a developing fetus may be classified as an unborn child. The decision will allow unborn children, particularly those from low income families, to benefit from the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

"This proposal by President Bush is the most straightforward act of justice on behalf of humanity that we have witnessed to date," said Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition. "The fact that a woman who is pregnant carries a preborn child should be fairly obvious, but those who promote the killing of the preborn have attempted over the years to make that child invisible." Mr. Hughes continued, "President Bush shows compassion for the mother and the child and backs it up with political action. This is the kind of leadership we need here in Canada." he stated.

Family Research Council (FRC), Concerned Women for America, Feminists for Life (FFL) and Operation Rescue West all praised the measure. FRC President Ken Connor said, "It would be shameful for pro-abortion advocates to oppose this policy for the sake of staking out political ground. Unborn children deserve the same health care benefits as all Americans." FFL President Serrin Foster noted that the first female U.S. presidential candidate, Victoria Woodhull, wrote in 1870, "The rights of children as individuals begin while yet they remain the fetus."

OLYMPIC ATHLETES GETTING PREGNANT AND ABORTING TO BOOST PERFORMANCE

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

SALT LAKE CITY, February 1, 2002 (LSN.ca) - In the Feb.4 issue of Report magazine, "Brave New World", columnist Celeste McGovern writes of a gruesome method of blood doping used by some female athletes to boost athletic performance. Since enhancing drugs and even regular blood doping can be identified by regulators, the pregnancy-abortion scheme, while officially banned, is virtually impossible to stop.

Mona Passignano, director of research at the Texas pro-life group Life Dynamics is quoted by Report quoting from a Finnish sports medicine expert: "Now that drug testing is routine, pregnancy is becoming the favourite way of getting an edge on competition." One Russian athlete told a reporter that as long ago as the '70s, gymnasts as young as 14 were ordered to sleep with their coaches to get pregnant--and then abort. The procedure is so well known it has made it to the textbooks. LifeSite found the method described in an online textbook in physiology by Dr. Poul-Erik Paulev of the Department of Medical Physiology, University of Copenhagen.

Professor Paulev writes that pregnancy seems to increase muscle strength in female athletes. "Female top athletes - just following the time when they gave birth to their first child - have set several world records. Of course, this is acceptable as a natural and unintended event. However, in some countries female athletes have become pregnant for 2-3 months, in order to improve their performance just after the abortion."

55 MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ASK BUSH TO "ZERO-FUND UNFPA"

History of UNFPA Complicity in Forced Abortion Presented

WASHINGTON, February 1, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Fifty-five members of Congress sent a letter to the President of the United States yesterday asking that he zero-fund the United Nations Population Fund for their support of coercive abortion and involuntary sterilization. Pro-abortion members of Congress also submitted a letter to Bush demanding a release of the UNFPA funds, it was signed by 126 members. The letter in support of UNFPA totally ignores the mountain of evidence against UNFPA as well as a law which forbids US funds from supporting such activities.

The letter to the President quotes current law on the matter, referred to as the Kemp-Kasten amendment, which states: "none of the funds made available in this Act nor any unobligated balances from prior appropriations may be made available to any organization or program which, as determined by the President of the United States, supports or participates in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization."

The letter also reveals important historical information on the former denial of funds to UNFPA based on the same concerns. It notes that former Presidents Reagan Bush invoked Kemp-Kasten disqualifying UNFPA from receiving funds. The letter notes importantly that the Agency for International Development (AID) officially declared that UNFPA "participates in the management of a program of coercive abortion" as defined in the law. "That declaration was challenged in a lawsuit filed by the UNFPA-funded Population Institute, but a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia unanimously ruled on August 16, 1986 that the evidence presented by AID "amply supports" the AID cutoff of the UNFPA."

MONKEY EMBRYOS CREATED WITHOUT SPERM USED FOR STEM CELLS

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

WORCESTER, MA, February 1, 2002 (LSN.ca) - A report in today's edition of Science magazine reveals that researchers in the US have created monkey embryos without the use of sperm and have extracted stem cells from those embryos.

The embryos, developed by duplicating the chromosomes within the egg in a process called parthenogenesis, are not stable and thus the embryo cannot develop fully. However, the scientists at Advanced Cell Technology, which recently claimed to have cloned human embryos, say they were able to extract stem cells from the embryos known as "parthenotes".

Azim Surani of the Wellcome Trust and Cancer Research Campaign Institute of Cancer and Developmental Biology in Cambridge warned about the possible dangers of the stem cells. "We should be aware that there are differences between normal ES cells and parthenogenetically-derived cells," says Surani. "We can't assume they are perfectly all right."

MICRO-CHIP TO MASS-PRODUCE CLONES

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

LOS ANGELES, February 1, 2002 (LSN.ca) - A chip that will automatically create hundreds of cloned embryos at a time is being developed by a Californian biotech company, New Scientist reports today. The long and laborious process of removing the nucleus from eggs in order to begin the cloning process has been automated.

Aegen Biosciences has created a nuclear transfer array which consists of a silicon slice a few centimeters across which holds hundreds of eggs in tiny wells. The eggs are then denucleated by placing the chip in a centrifuge which forces the nuclei out of the egg through a small hole in the bottom of each well. The company's founders Richard Kuo and Gregory Baxter are now working on the next step, which is to fuse a donor cell with the denucleated egg.

The New Scientist reports that "If the chip does improve success rates in animals, it is likely to be used to create cloned human embryos."
