GROUP VOWS TO HAND OUT CONDOMS AT WORLD YOUTH DAY
Anti-Catholic Billboards by Catholics for a Free Choice
TORONTO, February 4, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The pro-abortion group that calls itself Catholics for a Free Choice (CFFC), has launched a campaign in Toronto to target the 750,000 youth expected at the upcoming World Youth Day. The campaign includes billboard and public transit advertising as well as a planned condom and propaganda distribution at the Catholic event featuring Pope John Paul II, the world's most renowned pro-life and pro-family advocate.
Kathleen Howes, Canadian coordinator of CFFC said the condoms to be pedaled to the youth delegates would carry the message, "Don't leave it up to your Guardian Angel." The billboards, two of which are already up in the Toronto area say, "Because the bishops ban condoms, innocent people die."
Monsignor Peter Schonenbach, general secretary of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, was quoted in the Feb. 1 Globe and Mail as strangely responding, "It's a free country. They can do what they want … The church is stuck with its position on this." The Globe further reported that Schonenbach "said the issue has been difficult for the global church, which embraces different social viewpoints; he likened it to Pope Paul VI's controversial and unexpected decision to ban the birth-control pill in 1968.”
Jim Hughes of Campaign Life Coalition strongly disagreed with the CFCC campaign saying that "the Church's position on these issues is solid” and that "Paul VI's encyclical was prophetic". Hughes further commented that "developments in society at large have proven that the moral teachings of John Paul II are vastly superior and more loving towards young people than the corrupting policies of the Playboy Foundation financed CFCC ".
