CANADIANS SICK OF SUPREME COURT JUDICIAL ACTIVISM
TORONTO, February 13, 2002 (LSN.ca) - An editorial in the Feb 6 edition of the National Post notes that a poll showing two-thirds of Canadians wanting an elected Supreme Court is a sign of "deep voter frustration with judges who appear to make the law rather than interpret it, and who are out of touch with mainstream values."
The editorial points out that "In the 20 years preceding the passage of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Supreme Court overturned exactly one law -- a federal statute making it a crime for Indians to be drunk off-reserve. In the two decades since, the Court has struck down nearly 100. Since 1982, the court has effectively banned capital punishment, eliminated abortion laws, ordered preferential treatment for "historically disadvantaged groups" (mostly women and visible minorities) and upheld labour laws that require workers to finance their union leaders' political agendas. Homosexual rights, which were seven times rejected by the legislators who wrote the Charter, were "read into" the document by the Supreme Court"

SLOVAKIA DECLARATION AFFIRMS SOVEREIGNTY ON ETHICAL ISSUES PRIOR TO JOINING EU
Declaration Affirms Pro-Life Stand
BRATISLAVA, February 13, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The parliament of the Slovak Republic adopted a declaration January 28, 2002, which affirms national sovereignty in culture and ethical issues. The declaration sets out clearly that ethical and cultural concerns such as life and family, must remain "in the exclusive power of the member states and respected by the European Union". The declaration also contains pro-life statements. The protection of life and the dignity of [the] human being from the conception to death" forms part of "the basis of society" in line with the "traditional values and ethical principles of the European civilisation", says the document.
While debate on the declaration lasted almost the whole first day of the 54th parliamentary session, the measure presented by Christian Democratic Movement [KDH] deputy Vladimir Palko was passed by an overwhelming majority. Leftists in parliament claimed the declaration was unnecessary but Conservatives warned that sovereignty over issues beyond culture and ethics required safeguarding. Conservative deputy Frantisek Sebej said, "I therefore believe that not only cultural and moral but, for example, also foreign policy, security, defense, tax and other issues should to the greatest possible extent remain in the hands of national governments."
The declaration was motivated by concerns that the European Union may in time try to impose uniform ethical standards which do not respect the fundamental dignity and inviolability of human life. Frantisek Miklosko [KDH] explained the necessity of the intervention saying, "We must realize that the [EU] convention, which is now being set up, will draft Europe's constitution. So, if there is still time to take a stance on matters in this process of the unification of Europe and unification of its emerging constitution, now is the time."

BRITAIN LAUNCHES $30 MILLION UNETHICAL GENETICS RESEARCH CENTER
LONDON, February 13, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Britain plans to capitalize on its decision to allow unethical research on human embryos and even human cloning. With pomp and ceremony British Prime Minister Tony Blair opened the new $30 million Wolfson and Weston Research Centre for Family Health in west London.
Blair acknowledged the controversy over the research to be conducted at the centre but dismissed concerns with appeals to "moral judgment," "truth" and "the benefit of human kind." He said: "Various branches of this science of genetics are going to change the way we live. For this country to be at the forefront of scientific research into the area, I think, is immensely important. We are going to march towards these new frontiers of science, assuredly applying our moral judgment, but not afraid to discover the truth in all its various aspects and how we can use it for the benefit of human kind."

CARDINAL URGES CONFRONTING EVIL OF "PASSIVITY" ON ABORTION DURING LENT
LOS ANGELES, February 13, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles urged Catholics to take time to reflect "upon our own lives and circumstances to see what evils can be eliminated during this Lent." Among the "areas that might need our attention," he cited "passivity toward attacks against the value of human life, such as abortion, the tossing away of newborn babies into dumpsters, and the neglect of the elderly."

NY STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL CONTINUES ATTACK ON CRISIS PREGNANCY CENTERS
Valentine's Day Counter Offensive Planned
NEW YORK, February 13, 2002 (LSN.ca) - New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer continues to hand out fear-mongering subpoenas to crisis pregnancy centers, and has so far hit a dozen centers. Pro-lifers are calling the tactic a "legal Sptiz-krieg" by the "waterboy" for the abortion lobby, noting Spitzer is "not 'pro-choice'...he is adamantly pro-abortion."
Chris Slattery, director of New York's largest network of crisis pregnancy resource centers, Expectant Mother Care, plans to launch a major legal counter-offensive to Spitzer's abortion Rights legal unit on Valentine's Day. He points out that New York suffers one of the highest rates of abortion in the country with 43% of all NYC pregnancies aborted.
