Possible serious side-effects of the pills being ignored
OTTAWA, January 3, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The Globe and Mail reports today that the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada is urging Canadian doctors to "skirt federal rules" by handing out "just-in-case" prescriptions for the abortifacient morning-after pill. Only in British Columbia and Quebec, where provincial laws have been changed to allow pharmacists to dispense the drug, can women buy it directly, however some doctors are circumventing laws in other provinces with the advance prescriptions.
Spokesmen for the Ontario Medical Association and the Society unapologetically admitted to the practice. "Lots of doctors are doing it," said Ted Boadway, executive director of the Ontario Medical Association. "If you want a perfect example of regulators ignoring patient needs this is it...so we're going and doing it our own way." André Lalonde, executive vice-president of the Society said, "We have been telling our members to write women an advance prescription for Plan B [the brand name of the leading post-intercourse contraceptive] so they can carry it with them. This is what we have to resort to."
These medical groups have teamed with pro-abortion groups to lobby the federal government to approve the abortifacient to be purchased directly from pharmacists. The Globe quotes Campaign Life Coalition Ontario President Mary Ellen Douglas as noting that "If conception has taken place, it aborts the baby...It pulls the rug out from under the baby before it can implant." Douglas said, "It isn't very responsible for doctors to be giving out [advance prescriptions], they hardly prescribe an Aspirin without seeing a patient first, this is just mind-boggling." She warned "pharmacists are being put in a position of prescribing a dangerous drug."
Side-effects of morning-after pills are numerous. About 50% of women experience nausea and 20% vomit. However, far more serious side effects include the increased risk of ectopic pregnancy and infertility. The Princeton University website promoting the pills warns: "It is possible ... that a woman using ECPs could have one of the dangerous or even fatal complications that have been reported in very rare cases with normal, prolonged use of birth control pills. These include: thrombophlebitis (bloodclots in the legs), lung clots, heart attack, stroke, liver damage, liver tumor, gallbladder disease, and high blood pressure".

VANCOUVER, January 3, 2002 (LSN.ca) - A Human Rights Tribunal hearing over an Evangelical Pastor's ad on homosexuality ended December 21, with the complainant shaking hands with the pastor. Reverend Ken Campbell, a frequent speaker at pro-life events, was taken before the tribunal to answer to charges that a 1998 ad he had published in a National newspaper was offensive to a practicing homosexual who complained to the BC Human Rights Commission.
Representing himself, to avoid the approximate $150,000 cost of legal representation, Campbell argued that his authority for preaching against homosexual conduct was the Bible. During the trial Rev. Campbell presented his stand honestly and courageously with the courtesy of a true Christian, pointing out that he harboured no hatred but rather love for those afflicted with the homosexual condition. The effect on the complainant, Kevin Stacey, was obvious as Stacey's testimony affirmed. Under cross-examination the complainant acknowledged that as he become acquainted with the respondent during the hearing, from their first hand-shake when they first met, he realized that Campbell was not "the red-necked, gay-bashing, Bible-thumping fundamentalist" the media had misrepresented Campbell to be, and, accordingly, that he had expected.
Campbell concluded his final submission inviting Stacey "to join him in calling Canadians to resolve their conflicts and disputes in the cordial and civilized manner which characterized this hearing." Stacey responded to the invitation by reaching across the table to warmly shake Rev. Campbell's hand. Tribunal Hearing Officer, Tom Patch, commended the principals for the mutual respect, dignity and civility with which they had conducted themselves throughout the hearing and invited them to contact him should anything further develop from that handshake adding that if he heard from them with such a positive report, he would not issue a ruling in the case.
The ruling is not expected for weeks, or even months.
FORMER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BUCHANAN DECLARES DEATH OF THE WEST
NEW YORK, January 3, 2002 (LSN.ca) - A new book by former US Presidential Candidate Pat Buchanan uses accurate United Nations population statistics to show that the US will be a Third World nation by the year 2050. A sneak preview of the book, to be launched Friday, the same day as an interview with Buchanan on NBC's Today show, was available from Matt Drudge. Buchanan predicts Europe will be inundated by an Islamic-Arab-African invasion and most First World nations, including Japan, will have begun slowly to vanish from the earth.
Regarding population Buchanan makes the following analyses:
- By 2050, only 10% of the world's people will be of European descent. One third of Europe's people will be over 60, and one-in-ten over 80. Involuntary euthanasia has already come to Europe.
- Between now and 2050, Asia, Africa, and Latin America will grow by three to four billion people -- 30 to 40 new Mexicos! -- as Europe will lose the equivalent of the entire population of Germany, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland.
- By 2050, 23 million Germans will have disappeared along with 16 million Italians and 30 million Russians.
- Russia will lose Siberia and the far east to China and be pushed out of the Caucuses and Central Asia, where Islamic populations are exploding while Russia's is dying.
- Either Europe must effect a radical cutback in pensions and health care for seniors, or Europe must import scores of millions of Arabs and Africans to care for the elderly and pay the taxes to sustain their welfare states. On matters related to religion, he predicts:
- The Islamic invasions of Spain and France in the eighth century, and of the Balkans and Central Europe from the 14th to the 17th centuries, will be reenacted in the lifetime of most of those now living. Islam has already surpassed Catholicism as the largest religion on earth.
- It is the Christian nations -- Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox -- that have begun to die. In a chapter titled, "Where Have All the Children Gone?" Buchanan explains why, and why it is unlikely the West can solve the demographic crisis before it leads to The Death of the West.
Drudge reports that in his chapter, "The De-Christianization of America," Buchanan argues that the death of the Christian faith in Western countries is a primary cause of their dying populations. Whenever faith dies, the people die. A new atheistic civilization is arising, he argues, and is using its dominance of the culture and the courts to drive Christianity out of the temples of our civilization.

AUSTRALIAN ABORTION BREAST CANCER SUIT SETTLEMENT REVEALED
TASMANIA, January 3, 2002 (LSN.ca) - During the debate after which Australian legislators in Tasmania voted in favour of permitting more abortions, it was revealed that a woman who underwent an abortion was awarded a settlement since she was not informed that abortion is associated with a higher risk of breast cancer. RFM News reports that the plaintiff's attorney in the lawsuit, Charles Francis, Queen's Counsel, had cautioned the parliamentarians about the possibility of increased litigation against abortion providers which might occur as a result of expanding abortion rights.
"In Victoria, civil claims for negligence from women suing their abortionists are becoming much more common. Doctors haven't warned them and about 10 per cent have serious psychological repercussions," said Francis.
The plaintiff, who cannot be publicly identified, due to a confidentiality clause in the settlement agreement, said her physician had not informed her of the research connecting abortion with an elevated breast cancer risk. The plaintiff proved her physician failed to secure informed consent, prior to her abortion, which led to this landmark decision. Francis commented on the settlement and also discussed additional cases in which plaintiffs alleged they suffered emotionally as a result of their abortions. Francis stated the plaintiffs in the emotional distress cases had obtained "quite large, out of court settlements."
RFM notes that since 1957, 28 of 37 studies have concluded abortion increases the risk of breast cancer in women.
ROMANIA SCAPS LAW AGAINST SODOMY AFTER PRESSURE FROM EUROPEAN UNION
BUCHAREST, January 3, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Romania has scrapped a law banning sodomy after the European Union made the removal of the law a condition of joining the EU. While the vast majority of the population was against the move, the government complied with the EU dictates. The Romanian Orthodox Church reacted negatively to the change in law noting that laws are needed to halt homosexual propaganda which is damaging to the family. The law also saw state funded counseling provided for those affected by the disorder.
Bishop Vincentiu Ploisteanu, spokesperson for the Orthodox Church's Holyl Synod condemned the pressure by the EU. "We want to join the European Union, not Sodom and Gomorrah," he said.
