MONTREAL, January 7, 2002 (LSN.ca) - As Stockwell Day announces his run for Alliance Leadership in Montreal today, the National Post has noted his success in Quebec during the last federal election. The Post reports that "Under Mr. Day's leadership, the party claimed 6.2% of the vote in the province in the last federal election -- a hefty increase from the negligible 0.3% Reform showing in 1997 and better than the federal Conservatives' 5.6%."

At the launch of his campaign tonight Day will be accompanied by several senior members of the Progressive Conservatives' Quebec youth wing. The paper reports that they quit the Tory party yesterday over Mr. Clark's relationship with the CA dissidents, whom they called the "most radical and openly anti-Quebec and anti-francophone of the Canadian Alliance dissidents."
