WOMAN SUES DOCS FOR NOT DETECTING PREGNANCY - SAYS WOULD HAVE ABORTED

MONTREAL, January 8, 2002 (LSN.ca) - A Quebec woman has launched a $90,000 law suit against two doctors since they did not detect her pregnancy despite five visits to the clinic, one less than a month before she gave birth to her 7 1/2 pound daughter. The Montreal Gazette reports that the woman's lawyer, Jean-Pierre Menard, says that the doctors' files verified the woman's reports. The woman said that she would have had an abortion had she known she was pregnant.

The daughter is now three years old. "The mother now loves her child, and things are going well," Menard said. Her irregular menstrual cycles and her lack of weight gain during the pregnancy were given as the reasons why the mother failed to recognize she was pregnant. The doctors who examined her found nothing abnormal.

ABORTIONIST SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR MURDER, ORDERED TO PAY JAIL COSTS

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

OKLAHOMA CITY, January 8, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Abortionist John B. Hamilton, 53, was sentenced today to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his wife Susan on Valentine's Day. The Oklahoman reports that Hamilton was also ordered to pay $11,104 for the cost of his incarceration in the Oklahoma County jail. The ruling marks the first time an inmate in County has been ordered to pay for his stay.

A medical examiner revealed that Susan died of blunt force trauma to the head and strangulation brought on by something being tied or pulled tightly around the neck. As the investigation into the case gained steam, the life of Oklahoma County District Attorney Wes Lane was threatened in a letter demanding he drop charges against Hamilton. Oklahoma City NewsChannel 4 received a letter in July warning that Lane would die if he did not drop charges against Dr. John Hamilton. The letter also said Lane's witness would also die and warned that the threat was "very serious."

WASHINGTON, January 8, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Alan Keyes, the only black candidate in the last US Presidential election, has been hired to host an MSNBC one-hour, five-night a week program. Keyes, the US Ambassador to the United Nations under the Reagan administration, is a solidly pro-life Catholic and splendidly articulate. The American media was lambasted by conservative African Americans for failing to give Keyes media exposure during his two presidential campaigns. Keyes himself said of the media coverage, "These racists don't want black people to know that the most capable candidate in this race has black skin, because that might excite some folks in the black community."

CNS News reports that the show is scheduled to air weeknights at 10 p.m. EST, starting on Monday, January 21. It is entitled, "Alan Keyes Is Making Sense."

MORE THAN ONE IN FOUR RATS IN EMBRYONIC STEM CELL EXPERIMENT DEVELOP TUMOURS

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

WASHINGTON, January 8, 2002 (LSN.ca) - A study on rats that has proponents of embryonic stem cell research raving about the wonders of the unethical science contains startling information on the harm of such research. While headlines trumpeted "Stem Cells May Treat Parkinson's", buried in the story is the fact that the researchers found that five of the 19 animals used in the study also developed tumors.

The study injected embryonic stem cells, which when created caused the death of embryonic rats, into the brains of rats which were altered to exhibit symptoms of Parkinson's disease. In a study appearing Tuesday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers at Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass., showed that embryonic stem cells would spontaneously convert to correct the Parkinson's symptoms.

Having only more than a quarter of test animals develop tumours is actually a great improvement, according to experts. Dr. Arlene Y. Chiu of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke said the study significantly lessened the development of tumours typical of embryonic stem cell research. AP reports that the current study reduced the problem by injecting only about 1,000 stem cells into each test animals whereas earlier studies injected more than 100,000 cells resulting in many test animals developing tumors.

UTAH JUDGE RULES SLAYING OF "UNBORN CHILD" IS MURDER EVEN BEFORE VIABILITY

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

FARMINGTON, January 8, 2002 (LSN.ca) - A man charged with murder who sought to escape double homicide charges by arguing that the unborn child he shot was not yet able to survive outside the womb and thus was not a "person" under the law, was thwarted Monday. State Judge Michael Allphin said the 1983 law which deems the slaying of an "unborn child" murder applies also to children in the womb who are not yet viable. Roger MacGuire, 47, is accused of shooting his ex-wife, Susan MacGuire, to death on Jan. 15, 2001. Prosecutors say he was angry about her pregnancy by her fiance and deliberately aimed at her unborn child. Judge Allphin agreed with prosecutors that the definition of a "person" in reproductive rights cases is not relevant in a criminal context. "Reproductive rights cases are simply inapplicable to restrict the state's interest in protecting unborn life," he said.
