A PRO-LIFE PERSPECTIVE ON THE FEDERAL CABINET SHUFFLE
OTTAWA, January 16, 2002 (LSN.ca) - While offering little hope for a turn-around for pro-lifers, the Liberal cabinet shuffle did have a couple of bright spots.
The shuffle saw two pro-abortion activists removed from their portfolios and from cabinet altogether. Maria Minna, former Minister of International Co-operation, was dropped. In that role she was in charge of the Canadian International Development Agency through which Canada put millions of dollars in to the coffers of pro-abortion groups such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and International Planned Parenthood (IPPF). Hedy Fry, former secretary of state for multiculturalism, a strident pro-abortion and pro-homosexual activist was also also removed. Fry was notorious for promising homosexual activists that Canada would be the foremost promoter of homosexuality at the United Nations. Opposition parties criticized the Prime Minister for his tactic of removing cabinet members who were a public embarrassment without having to criticize them directly.
While the pro-abortion and pro-euthanasia Allan Rock was thankfully removed from his post as Health Minister he was unfortunately replaced by Anne McLellan, another abortion advocate. Rock was moved to Industry where he will replace Brian Tobin who announced Monday that he is leaving politics. Records indicate that both Tobin and Rock are pro-abortion and thus the status quo, as bad as it is, will likely continue. The Industry portfolio is of concern to pro-lifers since it is responsible for the funding of new reproductive technologies such as destructive research on human embryos.

FORMER UNFPA DIRECTOR TO GIVE PRO-ABORTION TALK IN TORONTO
Bizarre Feminist Confab Funded by General Motors Canada and Your Taxes
TORONTO, January 16, 2002 (LSN.ca) - A "women's health forum" coming up this Friday and Saturday at the Metro Convention Centre in Toronto will feature the notorious Nafis Sadik, former head of the abortion promoting United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Sadik, now on the Board of Directors for the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy (CRLP) - the legal arm of the abortion movement in the U.S. - will speak on the "reproductive health and rights of women."
The Bay Centre for Birth Control and Planned Parenthood of Toronto, will be giving presentations to adolescent girls on topics including: "Let's Talk About Sex," "Questions About Birth Control and the Emergency Contraceptive Pill" and "Sex on the Couch." The website for the event advises that, "Teens Educating and Confronting Homophobia (T.E.A.C.H.) will discuss strategies around "naming, confronting and preventing homophobia," and, says the ad, "We will talk about pills, condoms, the injection, spermicides and so much more!"
In addition to General Motors Canada as the chief sponsor of the event, the government funded Ontario Women's Health Council is also listed as a sponsor. Harvey's, Swiss Chalet, TUMS, Liberty Health, CTV and the Toronto Star are among the other sponsors.

DETAILS ON BECOMING INVOLVED IN ONTARIO PC AND ALLIANCE LEADERSHIP ELECTIONS
TORONTO, January 16, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The Ontario Progressive Conservative and Canadian Alliance leadership elections are once again generating significant interest and political opportunity for social conservatives. The interest has been heightened by the real prospect of electing candidates who would represent their concerns.
As a service to those who are interested in casting a vote to decide the next leader of either or both of the two parties, LifeSite provides below some of the voting procedures and rules for the leadership elections.
ONTARIO PC LEADERSHIP RACE:
To be eligible to cast a vote for PC Party of Ontario leadership the final date to obtain a $10 membership is FEBRUARY 12 through the head office (can be purchased on line or by telephone) and FEBRUARY 23 through local riding associations. Voters must be 14 years of age or older.
Election day is March 23, 2001. Voting will be staged across the province as well as at a leadership Convention. The procedure is a different 'one-person, one-vote' system than that of the Alliance. Each electoral district will be worth 100 'Riding Votes', distributed based on the percentage of votes each candidate receives in the riding. The voting of eligible party members within any one riding therefore has equal weight with all the other ridings.
CANADIAN ALLIANCE LEADERSHIP RACE:
A mail-in ballot is open to all Alliance party members with paid-up $10 membership as of MARCH 1. Minimum age is 16. Voting begins March 8. It is a one-person, one-vote election as during the last leadership contest.
To sign up for the Ontario PC party and/or the Canadian Alliance contact the local riding association or:

STUDY: SINGLE-SEX CLASSES BENEFIT LEARNING
EDINBURGH, Scotland, January 16, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Researchers at Stirling University have found that single-sex classes are a benefit to education, especially regarding sensitive topics. Josephine Airnes, the report's author said, "This case study, which documents my attempt to investigate the impact of segregation on pupils' work habits, and their subsequent achievement in Standard Grade biology, would seem to suggest that boys are not failed by single-sex classes. It may be of benefit to pupils to work separately regarding gender in certain circumstances, for example, for practical work or sensitive topics in the syllabus."
According to The Scotsman, the study found girls believed that working in single-sex classes was advantageous, particularly for discussing sensitive information. Although boys believed there was no difference in a single-sex class, their performance was shown to improve in segregated classes.

FRENCH GOV'T PROPOSES BILL ALLOWING DESTRUCTIVE RESEARCH ON HUMAN EMBRYOS
PARIS, January 16, 2002 (LSN.ca) - France's socialist government tabled a bill Tuesday which would permit destructive research on human embryos, a practice which has been illegal in France since 1994. The bill does ban all human cloning, barring cloning "for therapeutic purposes."
AP reports that most lawmakers support the legislation which will not be voted on for several months. Just as with the Canadian legislation, scientists will be allowed to conduct deadly experiments on human beings (embryos) created during in vitro fertilization.

ABORTION REPLACING ADOPTION IN SOUTH AFRICA
A news report out of South Africa indicates that "Since abortions were legalised in South Africa young pregnant women are opting rather for an abortion than putting their illegitimate babies up for adoption. The shortage of white babies for adoption is so great that childless couples who do not want to adopt across the colour bar are deciding on surrogate mothers."
